Apple, towards the end of 2020, finally released its latest iPhone models, including the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro in October and the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max in November. All four feature 5G capability and OLED screens, although they differ in size and price.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max, which starts at $1099, is the most expensive of the two models, and perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s also the largest iPhone ever made, with a screen size of 6.7 inches. Those two things are perhaps the most prominent knocks against the Pro Max.
Most of the reviews from professional critics of the iPhone 12 Pro Max have been positive, although it’s been acknowledged that the device can’t necessarily fit in the pockets, or even the hands, of many potential customers.
The Verge, in their otherwise positive review, called the iPhone 12 Pro Max “very close to being too big.”
“There’s just no getting around it: the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a very big phone. The measurements don’t tell the whole story — by the numbers, it’s just a little bit bigger than the 11 Pro Max, but the new design with flat sides makes it feel much larger than it is, and makes it slightly harder to hold than a phone with curved sides,” the site’s review said. “I strongly recommend finding a way to safely see the 12 Pro Max’s size in person before making a call on ordering one.”
Joanna Stern’s Wall Street Journal review addressed the size issue as well, asking “can you live with a phone this big?”
“I’m not going to spend this iPhone 12 Pro Max review railing about how the phone is the size of Buckingham Palace. Or how its 6.7-inch screen could double as an ice-skating rink—no Zamboni required. Or how looking at your stovetop burners might give you a good sense of the size and height of the cameras,” Stern wrote. “I’m not even going to lobby to rename it the iPhone 12 Giant.”
The consensus would appear to be that the iPhone 12 Pro Max is both big and expensive, although the price isn’t that much higher than some other models, and that if one determines the Pro Max is too big for them, that there are plenty of options of other new iPhones to offer much of what the Pro Max does.
In the meantime, it doesn’t appear that customers are all that put off by either the price or size.
According to Flurry Analytics, of smartphones that were activated on Christmas Day this year, nine of the ten were iPhones, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max was the third most popular, and the most popular among 2020 models.
