Remember when Donald Trump used to stay up late at night and sometimes into the morning tweeting all manners of insults, policy ideas, complaints, and even retweets and likes of controversial statements from his followers?
He is doing it again on his own social network Truth Social.
This Twitter-clone has a button users can tap to “Re-Truth” statements they agree with. Now Trump is in hot water for re-truthing a heinous comment from one of his followers that appears to call for another insurrection.
A user dubbed @freeTX1776, had this stunning post February 1:
“Then they will have to figure out how to fight 80,000,000 + it’s not going to happen again. People my age and old will physically fight for him this time. What we got to lose? I’ll donate the rest of my time here on this planet to do it. And I know many many others who feel the same. They got my 6 and we Are Locked and LOADED.”
Is This Person Talking About an Armed Rebellion?
On Truth Social re-truth means to re-share so this missive was re-printed under Trump’s feed. If you know anything about guns, “locked and loaded” means there is a round in the chamber of a firearm and it is ready to shoot. Eighty million seems to refer to the number of votes that Trump received in 2020, but the real number is actually 74,222,958 votes or 46.8 percent of the total. So, @freeTX1776 has his or her facts wrong. But this person and others may be willing to “physically fight.” This may be a figurative assertion and not something literal, but it is shocking that the former president would appear to foment violence again by re-posting this material.
Some users of Twitter often put the disclaimer “Retweets do not equal endorsements,” so in fairness to Trump maybe he doesn’t totally “endorse” the user’s incendiary Truth Social post.
Possible Crimes Regarding January 6
But why would Trump consider creating more drama for himself? He is already being investigated by the Department of Justice for his actions leading up to the January 6 insurrection in 2021.
Congressional members of a House select committee have recommended he be prosecuted for various crimes that day and attempts at overturning the election.
Need to Let It Go
The former president may need to charge his phone in the wee hours of the night like the rest of us, but alas, this is not likely to happen.
He doesn’t seem to worry about violence against democracy or calls for armed rebellion on Truth Social.
Make DeSantis Toast While He Is At It
This latest social media incident comes as Trump seeks to bury his rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, before he even officially declares to run for the White House. Yes we get it Mr. President. You think DeSantis is disloyal because you originally endorsed him in 2017 during the governor’s first run for the top executive of Florida.
Trump wrote, “Remember, I was 233-20 in the Midterms, and got 1.2 Million Votes MORE than Ron DeSanctimonious in the Great State of Florida. Also, 12 Million MORE Votes in 2020 than in 2016, and Won!”
What Is a Globalist?
Other users jumped on this so-called “Truth” and replied that DeSantis is a “globalist.” What is a globalist anyway? I guess what the MAGA faithful means is that this pejorative refers to someone who is not an “America Firster” and believes in globalization that can result in unfair trade practices that eliminate jobs. Globalists also allegedly support destructive wars of choice.
Don’t Knock DeSantis’ Military Service
The only global transgressions that they could possibly see in DeSantis is his time in the U.S. Navy as an attorney for the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. He served at Guantanamo Bay and deployed to Iraq as an adviser to a U.S. Navy SEAL commander. Does that international military service mean DeSantis is a globalist? That would be an unfair characterization. It should also be noted that Trump never served in the military.
You Should Expect More of the Same from Donald Trump
Overall, the general public is likely not to care what Donald Trump posts on social media at the moment as Truth Social only has around four million users.
But he may start using Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram again after being re-instated by those platforms. Then voters will have to fasten their seatbelts for a steady diet of daily outrage from Trump comments. It will take us back to the years to when he was running for office and during his presidency.
Voters can only hope that he puts the phone down and gets some sleep.
