Joe Biden’s age and episodes of aloofness have had many voters questioning his fitness for a second term. A new poll shows that Democrats are comfortable with Vice President Kamala Harris taking the reins of power.

A Suffolk University/ABC News poll shows that 86% of Democrats who voted for Biden say they would support Harris as his successor should he be incapacitated or die in office. Reports suggested that Biden opted for a second term because he did not think Harris could win.

Seventy-three percent of Democrats approve of Harris’ job as vice president.

Democrats are eager to boost Harris’ sagging approval rating with a $10 million campaign cash infusion. Thirty-seven percent of Democrats recently said that Biden’s age makes him less interested in voting for him next year.

Harris Gets Mixed Marks From Pundits and Elected Democrats

Harris’ gaffes and lack of leadership have led some to compare her with former Vice President Dan Quayle. New York Mayor Eric Adams hit her for her lack of leadership on migration issues in March.

Author Chris Whipple noted in his book “The Fight of His Life” that Biden initially was frustrated with Harris after they entered office.

In January, Sen. Elizabeth Warren appeared to criticize Harris’ place on the Democratic ticket when she was interviewed by a local Boston public radio station. CNN quoted an unnamed Democratic Party operative as saying, “Right now, she seems to be an albatross.”

Other Democrats have expressed support.

“I think that it’s obviously an incredibly important position. Because she can be the number one surrogate for Joe Biden. She can speak to a whole swath of voters who are very important for him. But, look, the criticism about her is common to most vice presidents,” journalist Kate Andersen Brower said of Harris on Boston’s WBUR radio. “I mean, Biden was made fun of as vice president, too. It’s just a very difficult position to be No. 2. You know, famously, John Nance Garner, who was one of FDR’s VP’s said, ‘It’s not worth a warm bucket of spit.’ You know, the position is tough. And I think we’re seeing that play out in real time here.

She continued: “Right. I mean, that’s the thing. I never hear anything precise [from her critics]. The word salad is the most that you can point to. And it’s not, you know, that’s certainly not that terrible or embarrassing. I don’t really fully understand all the criticism. Because she has not done anything close to even what Dan Quayle did with the potato, which I think was kind of silly in the long run anyway.”

Kamala Harris Unpopular With Public At-Large

Democratic pollster Doug Schoen expressed concern about how the rest of the country views Harris.

“Democrats may be happy with Kamala Harris taking over, but the rest of the electorate almost certainly is not,” Schoen said. “Harris has lower approval ratings than Biden, and remains very much an open question to the electorate whether she is ready and indeed able to govern.”
