Taurus Model 608 is a clear favorite for those who want the reliability of revolver for home self-defense and don’t want to pay the high price for a Smith & WessonTaurus has really been stepping up their game in recent years. They’re known for producing some of the best firearms for hunting, home defense, and even target shooting. As you’d probably expect, the Taurus 608 is no exception. In fact, it’s one of the best revolvers for home defense. You can count on it to provide the protection you need and trust that it’ll hit the mark time and time again.

Taurus Model 608: The Fact

It’s incredibly accurate, thanks to its hammer-forged, stainless steel, 1:16.5” twist barrel and hand-fitted actions. You can choose between a 4” or 6.5” barrel. Some retailers also offer a model with an 8” barrel, but these are a bit tougher to come by.

It also features a standard fixed front sight and an adjustable rear sight that lets you point and shoot well to hit your mark every time. While it’s not as good as some high-end red dot sights, it still gets the job done.

The frame, barrel, and cylinder are all made with quality stainless steel and feature a matte steel finish. With this incredibly durable construction, you can expect your Taurus Model 608 to last for years and years through any conditions. It’s definitely not a very lightweight revolver. It’s actually even heavier than the Smith & Wesson 327 TRR8.

But, at between 45-51 oz (depending on the barrel length you choose), it’s heavy enough to absorb felt recoil but still light enough to allow for one-handed shooting. It even feels good in your hand, thanks to the soft, ergonomic rubber grip.

Measuring just 9.67” overall with the 4” barrel and 11.67” overall with the 6.5” barrel, there’s no question: it’s heavy for its size. But, it does offer quite a bit of power for such a small-sized revolver. You can load eight shots of either .357 Magnum or .38 Special +P ammo. The double/single-action trigger is nice and crisp, right out of the box, and should cycle appropriate rounds smoothly.

As far as safety goes, there are a couple of things to discuss.

In addition to the manual transfer bar safety, the Taurus 608 is equipped with the Taurus Security System (TSS). When engaged, this system won’t allow the manual safety to be disengaged, preventing the gun from being cocked and fired accidentally or by an unauthorized user.

Another cool feature is the factory-tuned porting and gas expansion chamber, both of which do a lot to mitigate recoil. This also helps to limit the muzzle flip for more comfortable shooting.

The Verdict

The Taurus 608 is relatively affordable for how powerful, accurate, and reliable it is. On average, you should be able to find it for just under $800. If you need a compact, low recoil revolver you can count on for personal or home defense, you can’t go wrong with Taurus’ Model 608.
