VP Kamala Harris Gun Talking Points Jeered – Vice President Kamala Harris has become the Biden administration’s point person on guns; however, her talking points about AR-15s have been panned.

Kamala Harris At It Again

“Weapons of war have no place on the streets of a civil society. Congress must pass an assault weapons ban. President Biden will sign it,” Harris tweeted on Thursday.

Gun-rights Advocates Mock ‘Weapon of War’ Claim

It was met with mockery by many on the conservative right. “Make you a deal we will ban all the weapons that you can show are used on an actual battlefield. Which is not an AR-15,” Dr. Mark Young, host of Blunt Force Truth, tweeted.

AR-15s cosmetically represent the military’s M-4 or M-16; however, they lack the ability to fire automatically.

A true assault weapon has a setting for automatic firing. A semi-automatic rifle like the AR-15 or the Ruger Mini-14 uses the same cartridge and fires a single bullet each time the trigger is pulled.

The American Firearms Association nailed Harris saying “That’s why we left $7 billion dollars in real weapons of war on the streets of Afghanistan . . . because they aren’t civil!”

Harris notably supported Joe Biden’s pullout from Afghanistan, saying she would not have done anything differently.

“This republic was founded by free people using weapons of war,” radio host and former NRA spokesperson Dana Loesch tweeted. “They literally made this society. You’ll ban nothing and Biden will sign nothing.”

Gun advocate Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., who has made headlines due to his family’s arsenal of firearms asked Harris if government agencies should have the “weapons of war” she was referring to.

“Your body guards, and dozens of ‘civil’ agencies like the USDA, the US Dept. of Ed., and the EPA possess the firearms you are calling weapons of war,” Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., tweeted. “The reality is you want every citizen disarmed and every government agency armed with these guns.”

Harris Repeated Prior Claim About Guns

Kamala Harris has used the “weapon of war” talking point on repeated occasions.

“Weapons of war have no place on the streets of a civil society. Background checks and red-flag laws are common sense because it is reasonable to want to know before someone buys a gun whether they have been found by a court to be a danger to themselves or to others,” Harris said at a gun control event earlier this month.

Biden claims that restoring the 1994 assault weapons ban will reduce gun violence; however, his calculus ignores many factors.

This includes the overall drop in crime during the 1990s and the fact social media and the 24-7 news cycle were not what they are today.

Information traveled slower back then, and there were fewer opportunities for copycats. Also, his talking point about high-capacity magazines ignores that horrific crimes such as the 2006 Virginia Tech shooting were carried out by assailants with multiple firearms carrying low-capacity magazines.

FBI statistics also show four times as many people were murdered using knives than semi-automatic rifles in 2019.

Statistics from that year also showed that pistols committed 45.7% of gun crimes, while only 2.6% were committed by criminals using rifles of unspecified types.
