IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley, who alleges that the Department of Justice allowed politics to get in the way of an investigation into Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, is set to testify to Congress next week about his claims.

The plans were announced by the Republican-led House Oversight committee on Wednesday, July 13, marking another major milestone in the investigation into Hunter Biden’s failure to pay millions of dollars in income tax.

The House Oversight Committee confirmed that the public hearing will take place on July 19, with Shapley expected to answer questions about his claims that the Department of Justice acted in a way that would protect the Biden family against an embarrassing prosecution. Shapley is also expected to be joined by an additional unnamed former IRS criminal investigator who legislators say possesses “critical information” about the investigation.

House Oversight Chair James Comer said that the hearing would be an opportunity for “credible” whistleblowers to present the information to the public.

“We need to hear from whistleblowers and other witnesses about this weaponization of federal law enforcement power. This hearing is an opportunity for the American people to hear directly from these credible and brave whistleblowers,” the Kentucky legislator said.

“I look forward to their testimony as the Oversight Committee, along with the House Judiciary Committee and Ways and Means Committee, work to deliver transparency and accountability,” he continued.

What Shapley Claims

In May, Shapley came forward with information about the IRS’ investigation into Hunter Biden, claiming under oath that U.S. Attorney David Weiss had sought the authority to bring charges against Hunter Biden but was denied by the Department of Justice. However, in a letter to Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Weiss denied the claims and insisted that he did not request a special counsel designation as Shapley claimed.

“To clarify an apparent misperception and to avoid future confusion, I wish to make one point clear: in this case, I have not requested Special Counsel designation,” Weiss said in the letter.

Shapley also revealed earlier this year that while he was working as an investigator for the IRS, he obtained messages sent by Hunter Biden on WhatsApp to Chinese businessman Henry Zhao. The contents of the messages were later released to the public, showing that the president’s son used his father as leverage to insist that his Chinese business associates paid him.

“I will make certain that between the man sitting next to me and every person he knows and my ability to forever hold a grudge that you will regret not following my direction,” Biden said in the message.
