Marjorie Taylor Greene is Making Her Moves and Raising Money – Georgia’s Republican firebrand Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green may no longer be on the extreme right Freedom Caucus, but she remains a major force within the Republican Party. Greene, who represents Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, rapidly became a national figure following her election to the House of Representatives in 2020.
The former cross-fit trainer turned activist turned lawmaker has been a fierce supporter of former President Donald Trump and an equally fierce critic of President Joe Biden.
At times Greene has been seen as an obstructionist – and despite House Republicans’ calls to add a series of far-right culture war priorities to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), Greene vowed to vote against it after her own amendments were rejected. One was to pull $300 million in funding from Ukraine, while another was to stop the creation of a Center of Excellence in the Eastern European nation, and the third was to demand that no cluster munitions or cluster munition technology be sold or sent to aid Kyiv.
However, she reversed course and voted with the party – for which she was rewarded.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has promised her a seat on the conference committee that will hash out the differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill, NBC News first reported. Greene, who has opposed any funding for Ukraine, will now be in the catbird seat. She has said her goal in the conference committee would be to convince her colleagues that any additional money for the war-torn country should be offered as part of a separate supplemental funding package.
“I think that’s an important opportunity for me to have to represent not only the people in my district, but the people all over America that do not want their tax dollars spent on an NDAA that funds a foreign war,” Greene said on Friday, the New Republic reported.
What is also notable is that normally the power to reconcile the competing details of the bill typically goes to members of the House and Senate Armed Services Committees – those lawmakers who have actually spent months writing the bills. Instead, Greene now has a seat at the table despite the fact that’s not on the relevant committees
This is also the same Greene who has called for the U.S. withdrawal from NATO.
“Greene is also not the kind of lawmaker who’s likely to play a constructive role in the behind-closed-doors negotiations. And yet, here we are, watching McCarthy handing her a sought-after prize anyway,” noted Steve Benen, producer for “The Rachel Maddow Show”, the editor of MaddowBlog, and an MSNBC political contributor.
Benen was further quick to note that Greene is a former QAnon supporter, and had called for Muslim members of Congress to take their oaths of office on a Christian bible.
In the past McCarthy’s office has condemned Greene’s extremism, and proposed removing her from one of her committee assignments. Now it appears she’s been rewarded for those same views.
