More Stimulus Checks: Virginia Families On Track to Receive $500 Rebates – While the federal government appears to have given up on issuing new stimulus checks to American citizens to combat rising inflation, state governments continue to use tax surpluses and leftover funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to provide direct financial support to millions of taxpayers.
Among the states working to make life more affordable for residents is Virginia, where taxpayers should expect to receive up to $500 in tax rebates this year.
According to the Virginia Department of Taxation, almost anybody who had a tax liability in 2021 will receive a tax rebate if they apply, with up to $250 available for individual filers and $500 for joint filters.
While not technically a stimulus check, the rebate is effectively the same thing, giving people who owe money some financial relief.
What Is A Tax Liability?
The term “tax liability” refers to the amount of tax that an individual owes to the state throughout the year, minus any credits, subtractions, or deductions. Anybody who owes the government money in Virginia, therefore, can use the tax rebates to offset that debt and reduce the amount that they owe.
When Will Rebates Be Issued?
According to the Virginia Department of Taxation website, rebates will begin to be issued by the fall of this year.
The state website described how anybody eligible for the rebates should file their taxes by July 1 to receive their rebate in October. The rebates will be issued on October 16 and received by eligible recipients on October 31.
How to Receive the Rebates
Anybody who filed a tax return should expect to receive the rebate without applying. Individuals who specify that they prefer to receive tax refunds by check will receive them by mail, while those who receive refunds by direct deposit will receive direct deposits into their bank accounts.
Direct deposits will come with the scription “VATXREBATE.”
If you are among those who receive the checks by mail, be sure that your mailing address is up to date. You can do this by going to the government website, logging in to your individual account, and updating your address.

Contact information can also be updated by mail, with letters addressed to the Virginia Department of Taxation and including full name and social security number, spouse’s name and social security number if filing jointly, the old mailing address, and the new mailing address.
