More than two months after its theatrical release, “Top Gun: Maverick” rose back to #2 on the box-office charts last weekend. It’s likely to still be playing in theaters well past Labor Day
Fortunately, that’s not stopping Paramount Pictures from making it available for home video.
You’ll be able to buy “Top Gun: Maverick” on Tuesday, Aug. 23, on Digital. If you’re hoping for a 4K Ultra HD, DVD or Blu-ray disk, you’ll have to wait for a Nov. 1 release. More than two months between digital and physical releases seems like a huge gap, but everything about “Top Gun: Maverick” seems to be rewriting the rules in Hollywood.
The worldwide box-office gross is more than $1.3 billion, and it’s the 13th biggest movie of all time. The domestic box office is at $673 million, making it the seventh biggest movie in the United States and Canada. It’s sure to pass “Avengers: Infinity War” this week and has an outside shot at passing “Black Panther” ($700 million domestic) for #5.
Those numbers are just crazy, and it’s by far the biggest movie of Tom Cruise’s storied Hollywood career. While “Top Gun: Maverick” is a sequel, no one in the core moviegoing audience was born when the original movie was released in 1986. In an era when the biggest money makers all seem to feature comic-book characters or dinosaurs, “Maverick” is a true outlier.
Fans will get 110 minutes of bonus content with the digital release, and the material will be included on the Blu-ray in the 4K UHD and Blu-ray physical releases in November.
