Poll: Economic Woes Tanking Joe Biden Approval Numbers – President Joe Biden’s poll numbers fell from 45% approval in February to 38% for March, a new AP/NORC poll finds. While 61% said they disapproved of the president’s job performance. The reason: the economy.
Joe Biden and The Economy: What the Polls Say
Americans are worried about their economic prospects amid rampant inflation and news about the potential banking crisis. This is all likely dragging the president’s poll numbers down.
Only 25% of those surveyed reported thinking the economy was headed in a good direction.
The poll of 1,081 adults was conducted between March 17 and March 20 with a plus or minus 4% margin of error.
The RealClear Politics polling average put Biden’s job approval rating as of Friday stood at 43% with 51.6% disapproving.
Only 31% of those surveyed approved of Biden’s handling of the economy, and 68% disapproved.
A CBS/YouGov poll conducted between March 20 and March 22 similarly found that only 31% of those surveyed had confidence in the economy.
Democrats are Not Happy Either
Democrats have grown softer on Biden’s handling of the economy.
Although 75% of Democrats approve of Biden’s job performance, only 63% approve of his handling of the economy. Among Republicans, only 4% approved of Biden’s job performance and 3% approved of his handling of the economy.
Only 15% of those surveyed think the way things are headed in America are in a positive direction.
It Gets Worse
Among major national institutions, confidence in the U.S. military, which historically enjoyed significant prestige among Americans is at an all-time low under Biden’s leadership with only 37% voicing their a great deal of confidence. That was down 10 percentage points since April 2022. Those saying they had a great deal of confidence in the military stood at 53% in September 2020, the last time that the poll was taken while Donald Trump was president.
A poll published in National Defense magazine, the publication of the defense industry lobby group the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA), found that the Biden administration’s policies toward the military were viewed as excessively political. The poll was released at the annual Reagan National Defense Forum held last December in Simi Valley, Calif.
“Military leadership becoming overly politicized,” was the top response with 62 percent saying it decreased their trust,” National Defense magazine said. ‘The performance and competence of presidents as the commander in chief,’ was the second most cited reason.”
Fifty percent in that poll said they were upset with the “so-called ‘woke’ practices undermining military effectiveness.”
Biden’s lowest point came last July when 36% of those surveyed said they approved of his job performance and 62% disapproved.
Presidents with poor economic numbers going into the general election have historically lost re-election, with the exception of former President Trump, who Biden defeated in 2020 largely due to disapproval of him personally.
Jimmy Carter lost to Ronald Reagan in 1980 due to the economy. The same was true in 1992 when George H.W. Bush lost to Bill Clinton.
Recent polling suggests that a rematch between Trump and Biden could be very competitive.
