Kamala Harris Is the ‘Bud Light’ of Vice Presidents

Last week was arguably not a good one for Vice President Kamala Harris.

Last week was arguably not a good one for Vice President Kamala Harris.

According to the newly released poll from NBC News, just 32 percent of registered voters said they had a positive view of VP Harris, compared to 49 percent who said they had a negative view, including 39 percent who expressed having a “very negative view.” Overall Harris had a net -17 rating.

As NBC News noted, it was “the lowest for any vice president in the poll’s history.”

Her approval rating was significantly lower than the most recent former VP’s low numbers at around the same point in their respective terms. By contrast, in October 2019, then-Vice President Mike Pence had a 34 percent positive and a 38 percent negative for -4 rating; while in December 2010, then-VP Joe Biden had a 34 percent positive and a 33 percent negative for a +1 rating. In May 2003, Dick Cheney was at 47 percent positive and just 24 percent negative for a +23 rating – and Al Gore was at 42 percent positive in March 1995, with a 27 percent negative for +15.

The poll’s findings were also a talking point for Fox News late-night host Greg Gutfeld, who in his opening monolog took aim at the Biden Administration and had Harris in his crosshairs.

“Leading the charge, VP Kamala Harris. It’s the only time she’s ever led. And congrats,” Gutfeld stated.

“According to a new poll from NBC, which is like a news network, but with Chuck Todd, Kamala is the most unpopular VP in recorded history. Think about that. She beat out Al Gore, some guy named Biden and even Dick Cheney and he shot a guy in the face. He had it coming, though, I think. I really don’t know that story too well. Anyway, so who says women can’t beat men when given the chance? Yes, ladies, you too, could suck every bit as much as men. She truly is the Bud Light of veeps.”

An Apt Comparison?

Some critics of Harris would say that the talk show host was actually being kind.

Though it was last month that Bud Light lost its top spot in the American retail beer market to Modelo – somehow despite all the controversy and backlash the brand has faced, it still remained in the number two spot.

Bud Light saw sales falling 24.4 percent, yet has remained the top-selling beer on a year-to-date basis. Bud Light’s parent company Anheuser-Busch also launched a new ad campaign that was meant to right the ship

“Bud Light established our ‘Easy to Drink, Easy to Enjoy’ platform at the Super Bowl and we are continuing to build on that message as we unveil our new ‘Easy to Summer’ commercial to officially kick off summer,” Todd Allen, vice president of marketing for Bud Light, said via a statement.

Reset Buttons For Harris and Bud Light

Much like with the Bud Light ad, the Harris team has tried for a “reset” of sorts, which included her appearances during Pride Month while she has given speeches that addressed the overturning of Roe v. Wade last year.

Harris has found her voice on the hot-button issue, and has managed to show her position without the infamous “word salad” she famously displayed for the previous two years.

In the case of Bud Light, the recent ad was widely mocked on social media, while sales continue to fall.

Kamala Harris may be finding her footing, but the poll numbers suggest a lot more work needs to be done.
