Did Joe Biden Doze Off During Hawaii Victim’s Speech?

Republicans should stick to criticizing Joe Biden for things of substance, such as when he lies or exaggerates, not for whether he happens to close his eyes for a few seconds due to boredom.

Conservative media posted a video of President Joe Biden listening to a speech on Monday during his visit to Maui that they said showed him falling asleep.

A community leader talked about how his home and those of his family members had been destroyed. Biden could be seen hanging his head down while listening to the speech for a few seconds.

Republicans have seized on prior instances where Joe Biden has seemed to doze off, such as in November 2021 during the COP26 climate conference, where he was seen closing his eyes, to cast him as too old and unfit for office.

Conservative Pundits Accuse Biden of Dozing Off

Fox News host Sean Hannity, who has a fixation on portraying Biden as a tired old man who likes to doze off, said, “Biden did manage to get in what might be a short nap. Maybe I should just say, nodding off. Maybe just resting his tired old eyes for, oh, about 12 seconds and then struggling to keep his eyes open staring off into the distance again, befuddled, bewildered and confused. It was well past Biden’s beddy bye time on the East Coast, and he was primed for his 12 hours or so standard of sleep.”

White House spokesman Andrew Bates condemned Republicans for sharing the video and claiming Biden fell asleep, “It’s unfortunate they feel the need to lie. Instead, they should join him in supporting the people of Maui.”

Biden’s Exaggeration Are Worse

New York Post columnist Miranda Devine claimed that the problems with Joe Biden go beyond Biden appearing to fall asleep in a post on X, “The ‘sleeping’ speculation was a bare smidge of the criticism of Joe Biden’s Maui visit. Morning Joe does not mention the ‘No comment’, the silence, the delay, the familiar tone-deaf invocation of his own past tragedies, the lies about his kitchen fire, the usual befuddlement. Talk about disinformation.”

Biden exaggerated the consequences of a kitchen fire in his Delaware home back in 2004, claiming that it almost killed his wife and destroyed his beloved 1967 Corvette while trying to say how he was like the victims in Lahaina.

“Lightning struck at home, on a little lake that’s outside of our home—not a lake, a big pond,—and hit a wire that came up underneath our home into the heating ducts and air conditioning ducts,” Biden said.

“To make a long story short, I almost lost my wife, my ’67 Corvette, and my cat.”

However, the Associated Press reported on Aug. 2, 2004 that, “Lightning struck the home of Sen. Joseph Biden, starting a small fire that was contained to the kitchen. No one was injured in Sunday’s fire, which started amid a storm that caused serious flooding in Pennsylvania and knocked out power to hundreds of Delaware homes and businesses.”

The AP report continued, “Biden is Delaware’s senior senator and the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. His wife, Jill, reported the fire Sunday morning, officials said.”

Republicans should stick to criticizing Joe Biden for things of substance, such as when he lies or exaggerates, not for whether he happens to close his eyes for a few seconds due to boredom.
