Glock pistols are the most popular pistols in the world. They are the “people’s pistols,” or, “pistolas del pueblo?” Anyway, you get the idea.
If you are in the market for your first Glock and ask a dedicated Glock owner what model you should buy, the answer will most likely be, “All of them.” Glocks inspire that kind of loyalty for a good reason. They are reliable, they shoot well, they are durable, and they are versatile.
These specialized striker-fired polymer pistols have seen widespread adoption across various government agencies, from law enforcement (local, state, and federal) to the Armed Forces, where Glocks have become quite popular with SOCOM’s Special Operators.
Glock doesn’t do redesigns very often, and when it does, people pay attention. The company officially launched the Gen 6 lineup at SHOT Show 2026 on January 20, fitting neatly into Glock’s 40th anniversary in the U.S. market.
Three pistols kicked off the generation: the G17, G19, and G45. After digging into the details, this isn’t just a texture refresh like Gen 4 to Gen 5 was. This is Glock actually listening to twenty years of aftermarket parts companies and finally building those fixes into the gun.
The Grips Fit And Comfort Have Improved
The biggest complaint about Glocks forever has been the blocky, rectangular grip. Gen 6 addresses that directly with a new palm swell molded into the frame to match the natural curve of your hand, along with an enlarged beavertail that sits higher in the hand without inviting slide bite.
Glock also widened the RTF6 texture so it covers more of the frame than the RTF that showed up on some Gen 4 models, including new coverage on the thumb rests.
Glock now builds the “gas pedal” thumb rests straight into the frame. That’s significant because a flared thumb rest has been one of the most common aftermarket upgrades for more than a decade.
Glock listened to the user’s needs and just absorbed a large chunk of the accessory market into the factory weapon.
An Improved Trigger And Trigger Guard
The trigger guard is undercut now, which lets the shooter get a higher, more consistent grip, especially useful for shooters with smaller hands who’ve always had to reach around the Glock’s chunky guard.

Every Gen 6 model ships standard with a flat-faced trigger, which pulls the shoe rearward and shortens the reach to the trigger break. Thus far, user feedback on the new trigger is mixed.
Glock is careful to point out that the Safe Action system itself hasn’t changed; it is the same trigger safety, the same internal design philosophy, just a differently shaped shoe on top of it.
Slide serrations got deeper and more angled on the front and rear too, which really aids in racking the slide with wet or gloved hands.
The Optics Mounting Changes Are Significant
Here’s the part that matters most if you actually run a red or green dot on your carry weapon. Gen 6 completely replaces the MOS (Modular Optic System) plate setup with a new direct-mount system.
Instead of stacking an adapter plate underneath your choice of optic, which added height and another point of failure, Glock now machines the slide to accept polymer sealing plates that let RMR- and DPP-footprint optics mount directly and lower.
Each weapon ships with three different plates to cover the popular footprints out of the box.
That lower mounting height is a big deal as it removes a failure point that plenty of competition and duty shooters have complained about for years with the MOS. It’s essentially Glock’s answer to what SIG and the custom shops have been doing with slide-milled optics cuts, except now it comes from the factory with built-in sealing rather than relying on O-rings and a loose plate stack.
The frame also features a flared magazine well for faster reloads, and, importantly for anyone with a safe full of older Glocks, Gen 6 mags are backward-compatible with your existing Glock magazines. No forced buy-in on new mag inventory.
Price And Availability Remain The Same
Gen 6 pistols started shipping to dealers on launch day, January 20, 2026. MSRP is landing in the $650–$750 range depending on the model and finish, which is right in line with where Gen 5 pricing sat, so Glock isn’t using this as an excuse to jack up prices, at least not yet.
Each pistol comes with three magazines, a cleaning kit, a speedloader, extra backstraps, the three optic plates, and a case.
Is The Gen 6 Worth The Upgrade?
Glock’s Gen 6 release doesn’t mean that owners of Gen 5 pistols, face a “sell your gun tomorrow” situation, Gen 5s are still excellent, reliable pistols and will be for a long time.
But if simply must have the latest and greatest (iPhone users), or you’re new to the market or you’ve always struggled with Glock’s grip angle and trigger reach, Gen 6 addresses the actual complaints people have had rather than just changing cosmetics.
The optics system alone is the most legitimate engineering upgrade Glock has made in years, and it shows the company is finally building for how people actually carry and compete today instead of just iterating on the same 1980s frame forever.
