Can Putin Really Fight a Two-Front War in Ukraine?

On day 172 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Russian military is struggling with a strategic conundrum in Ukraine: attack in the Donbas or defend in the South?

South or Donbas?

Russian forces are trying to conduct operations on two fronts at the same time, according to the daily estimate of the British Ministry of Defense. However, the two efforts rely on two different sources of troops, and are thus likely to have dissimilar effectiveness.

In the Donbas, or at least some parts of it, the Russian offensive operations are relying on Russian-backed separatist forces that are trying to reach Bakhmut from Donetsk City. In other parts of the Donbas, the Russian military or the mercenaries of the infamous Wagner Group are taking the lead in operations.

In the south, the Russian military continues to relocate forces from the rest of the battlefield in an attempt to defend against the incoming Russian counteroffensive against Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Kherson is the most important urban center to have fallen to the Russian forces and the only provincial capital Kyiv has lost.

Equally important, Kherson is the only ground north of the Dnipro that the Russian forces have captured and held. With a limited or non-existent bridge-crossing capability, the Russian military needs to hold Kherson if it wishes to push northwards.

“Over the past week, Russia’s priority has likely been to re-orientate units to reinforce southern Ukraine,” the British Military Intelligence assessed.

“However, in the Donbas, Russian-backed forces – largely militia of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic – have continued to attempt assaults to the north of Donetsk city,” the British Ministry of Defense stated.

“Particularly heavy fighting has focused on the village of Pisky, near the site of Donetsk Airport. The settlement probably remains contested. The area has been on the front line of the Donbas Line of Control since 2014,” the British Ministry of Defense added.

“The Russian assault likely aims to secure the M04 highway, the main approach to Donetsk from the west,” the British Military Intelligence assessed.

Russian Casualties

The Russian military continues to lose an unsustainable amount of men in Ukraine, frustrating any offensive plans in the Donbas.

From Twitter: “An AZP S-60 57mm AA gun mounted on a truck used by UA forces- one example of the many improvised weapons appearing recently,”

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense claimed that as of Sunday, Ukrainian forces have killed approximately 43,550 Russian troops (and wounded approximately thrice that number), destroyed 233 fighter, attack, and transport jets, 194 attack and transport helicopters, 1,864 tanks, 980 artillery pieces, 4,126 armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles, 261 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS), 15 boats and cutters, 3,039 vehicles and fuel tanks, 136 anti-aircraft batteries, 784 tactical unmanned aerial systems, 91 special equipment platforms, such as bridging vehicles, and four mobile Iskander ballistic missile systems, and 187 cruise missiles shot down by the Ukrainian air defenses.

Please correct your mistake – it is not Russian counteroffensive. You meant Ukrainian offensive….

british intelligence – these are the nice guys who report what happened a week ago?🤣
The sands have already been taken. fighting is already underway in Bakhmut. half of Soledar has already been liberated. Avdiivka is already surrounded from two sides and work is underway to cut the last supply line of this fortified area. are there still adherents of the “impregnable Mariupol” who believe that the Russians will not take Bakhmut, Soledar and Avdiivka?
and of course, the “most reliable data” of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry about the losses of Russia. 🤣 if you believe these data, then the Russian army is the most incredible army of superheroes! having lost more than half of their personnel, fighting on ancient T-62s, they continue to advance and liberate one settlement after another, destroying the Ukrainian army, organized according to NATO standards, trained by the best instructors and armed with advanced Western weapons! 😎 no one gets the feeling that the Ukrainians exaggerate their achievements a little? about 10-15 times. 😂

Pisky settlement in the south western donetsk region has already been freed of ukro fighters after advancing Russian forces hurled a handful of thermobaric rounds at their dug-in trenches.

Russia can fight multi-front war against ukros, even they’re now been openly supported by experienced CIA operatives and US Army advisors near their front line.

Putin on Monday Aug 15 2022 said Russia is willing to share advanced military tech and new weapons with its steadfast allies. Including the TOS-1 thermobaric weapon that has badly shaken ukros & even Biden’s very own cojones (balls).

From Russia with Hate – Ah yes, the Russian way of war is to go after a place like Pisky that used to have maybe 2000 people, firing heavily with TOS-1A thermobaric artillery systems, using combined arms army-level artillery assets to complete the capture of small villages after leveling them and leaving essentially nothing behind, and then claim it has been “liberated”. Meanwhile, the thinning of Russian forces along the eastern front has allowed Ukraine to advance several KMs towards Izyum, among other places. The entire eastern front is a mixed bag, but for Ukraine Izyum is a bigger prize than most others to keep GLOC supply lines to other areas from Belgorod further east, and to secure Kharkiv’s southern flank. Kharkiv is Ukraine’s 2nd largest city after all.

As well, the precision bombing of the bridge at the Hydro plant along the Dnipro River in the south means that up to 25,000 Russian troops on the north/east side of the river are basically cut off from major resupply. We’ll see how long their current supply of ammo lasts. They are already mass looting in Kherson. Likely trying to stock up on warm clothes for the winter by stealing from the locals since their own army is so terrible at planning and/or caring for them.

You had previously wondered what ’50 towns were liberated’ in Kherson. It’s laughable that you focus on such a detail. All one has to do is look at a map to see how small those specs of towns are… and when not swallowing Putin’s propaganda news you can learn where the Russians were stopped as they tried to march on Mykolaiv… and then follow the news to see where the front line has been pushed back south. It’s pretty easy to get to 50 little towns/villages.

Russian forces recently launched airstrikes on Andriivka, Bila Krynytsya, Lozove, and Velyke Artakove (near the Ukrainian bridgehead over the Inhulets River), and Novohryhorivka and Myrne (north of Kherson City). Russians also tried to launch an attack on Oleksandrivka, which Ukraine controls, in far southwest Kherson by the Buh River. That’s Ukraine pushing the Russians pretty far south from Mykolaiv

Russian forces are apparently continuing to endanger their command posts, likely to be ready to control their forces in anticipation of a possible Ukrainian counteroffensive. It is unclear when or if Ukrainian forces will launch a large-scale ground counteroffensive in southern Ukraine, but they are effectively using Russian preparations for such a counteroffensive to attrit Russian leadership and logistics capabilities. Recent reports indicate the Russian command has gone east/south of the Dnipro River after the last bridge was destroyed so they do not get trapped if Ukraine does launch a large offensive in Kherson.

I lean towards Ukraine using their effective fire control over Kherson to continue attritting Russians until they withdraw, surrender, or are sufficiently worn down after the harsh winter to be more easily defeated. Meanwhile, a possible counter offensive is brewing in Zaporizhia. Either way the Ukrainians have effective spread the Russians thin, and the more western weapons they acquire the easier it will be to degrade Russian capabilities. The Russians have been reduced to mass terror tactics of firing on civilian buildings or completely levelling whole towns as their only effective way to control them. Even if more towns are taken, and the conflict is frozen…then what? Good luck paying for reconstruction with your 3rd world economy, a ton of sanctions, and the world moving away from Russian oil and Gas. Oil was down another $5 earlier today.

Time is not on your side comrade. Have a nice day.

I’m tired of seeing Ukraine’s statement of Russian losses and they refuse to publish their own losses. Without proper context those numbers are meaningless. In the end it’s just two White European countries losing a generation of men, like in World War one. Pointless. Who benefits?

    naive Gary Jacobs.
    1) in Pesky, the Armed Forces of Ukraine created a large fortified stronghold with concrete defensive structures. it was strengthened for 8 years. to say that it is “just a small city for 2000 people” is a common lie😉 (1) the loss of this fortified area poses a threat to another major fortification center in Avdiivka. and yes, the RF Armed Forces perephali this fortified area TOS-M1 and took by storm.
a little about “a small town for 2000 people”. The Armed Forces of Ukraine constantly use civilian infrastructure to accommodate military facilities. there are a lot of videos and photos of the Ukrainian military in schools, hospitals and multi-storey buildings on the network. if before civilians were given the opportunity to evacuate, now the Armed Forces of Ukraine prohibit civilians from leaving objects using the civilian population as protection against Russian missiles. at the same time, Ukrainian Nazis regularly shell the center of Donetsk where there are no military facilities. targeting the civilian population. recently used ammunition with anti-personnel mines. more than 50 civilians have already been affected by mines “petals” in Donetsk. this is a war crime. very indicative of the United States and you personally support such moral freaks as the Ukrainian Nazis.😎
attack on Izyum? several kilometers? 2? 3? I will even tell you where this “impressive success” was achieved, for what reasons and how it ended for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.😉 We are talking about the village of Mazanovka. it is really very small. about 10 houses. there are no such serious fortifications as in Peski. The Russian Armed Forces withdrew from this village to the forest and took up defense there. without a fight. Ukrainian troops immediately entered the village and reported on the victory. but success must be developed! (this part of the story hasn’t been told to you yet😉) and Ukrainian troops attacked the RF Armed Forces in the forest. the Russians let the Ukrainians into the forest and covered them with artillery. after that they returned to their positions and collected several dozen corpses of Ukrainians. from 08/09/2022 the front line there does not change.

    2) bridges 3. HIMARs did not destroy a single one in 2 months of shelling, they managed to damage 1 (traffic continues on it) and 1 temporarily disable. the repair will take about a week and to prevent this it has to be fired constantly. very questionable success. BUT! carried away by masturbation at HIMARs, you completely forgot about the engineering troops and pontoon crossings with the help of which the RF Armed Forces can organize supplies at any site, and of course you forgot about the third bridge. do you want to laugh? the third bridge, on which not a single rocket hit, is the railway bridge over which the group is supplied 🤣 The Antonovsky bridge and the bridge at the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station are used by civilians. oops! again Ukrainian Nazis and the USA are committing war crimes against the civilian population!😎
about mass looting do you have data from the same source from which about 50 liberated cities? (2) are you sure you didn’t mix it up with Nikolaev? from there now take out all the documentation of government agencies. apparently so that the Ukrainians fleeing the attack do not trample on Zelensky’s important directives🤣

    3) you decided to refer to the events of 5 months ago? can still remember that 30 years ago it was the territory of the USSR? in the Kherson direction, the front has not changed for 5 months. so where are these 50 liberated cities. give their names. I already told you the name of one settlement in the gray zone, which Ukraine has already liberated 3 times. for patriotic news. they don’t report how they got out of there, they report how they entered. oops! victory! 😂 and why did it become Putin’s propaganda? this nonsense, about 50 liberated cities, was reported by a Ukrainian official and repeated on this site. is this a Putin site?😲 (3)
    4) pushes back – this is if there were Russians in Andreevka last month, but today there are Ukrainians. but the Ukrainians have been in Andreevka for 5 months and cannot move anywhere. any concentration of forces leads to artillery strikes and heaps of corpses of Ukrainian Nazis. this is exactly what happened on August 13 in Andreevka and the other settlements you mentioned. so where is Ukraine pushing the Russian Federation? what settlements did Ukrainian troops capture last week? none? oh. How are the Russians doing? Sands (Donetsk), Udy (Kharkov) are taken offhand. there are more of them. This is just what I immediately remembered. it looks like you lied again about the advancement of Ukrainians in the Kherson direction😉 (4)
    5) “apparently”, “most likely”, “probably” the Russian command moved beyond the Dnieper … what did it stink? exactly! this is the data “most likely” of the British “apparently” intelligence! 🤣 Tell me honestly, are you tired of making yourself look like an idiot by repeating the nonsense that is published on behalf of British intelligence?
    6) and sweat lies about “civilian buildings” in which, by a strange coincidence, hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers die… (5)

out of 6 paragraphs you lied 5 times. victory will definitely be for Russia😎

Their use is in direct violation of the requirements of the Second Protocol “On the Prohibition or Restriction of the Use of Mines, Booby-Traps and Other Devices”, which is part of the Geneva Convention on the Prohibition or Restriction of the Use of Indiscriminate Weapons, adopted in New York on October 10, 1980.

In the spirit of full disclosure “I favor the Ukraine in this conflict.” That being said it looks like, (when you disregard the propaganda of both sides) that the war is in essences a STALEMATE. The Ukraine does not possess the firepower to make any substantial gains and Russia lacks the manpower to make gains.

Russia is a nation of 145 million people. Of that 145 million with the death rate exceeding the birth rate, 9.8 births per 1000 people and 16.7 deaths per 1000 people. 16.7 -9.6 leaves the nation 7.1 births per 1000 below replacement level. With a shrinking population there is little long term ability of the Russian army to take casualties. The fact that in Russia Women are out living men by 10 years also means the Russian population is becoming more and more female. In 2009 the Russian Population was 48 .1 million males and 52 million females IN THE CRITICAL AGE GROUP OF 15 TO AGE 64.

Now the next fly in the ointment for Russia is Drug and alcohol abuse. The latest information suggests that there are 4 to 6 million drug users in Russia. 70% of all drug users are male so that further detracts from the manpower available for military service. So now we are down to about 42 million men in the age of 15-64.

So every death or disablement on the battle field has a very great impact on the Russian Society.

Now as for the Ukraine. For all the hype about the Ukraine getting all these weapons from the west, (yes the are getting weapons, BUT NOT ANYWHERE NEAR THE NUMBER THAT THEY NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL ON THE BATTLE FIELD. Let’s look at the vaunted HIMARS system. The Ukraine has received about 20. That is 5 firing batteris or about a battalion an a half. In afganistan (a war in which airpower was the primary striking force the United States army fielded 3 artillery battalions (54 tubes). The Ukrainians don’t need 20 HIMARS launchers they NEED 2O0. Currently the United States has donated 90 M777 howitzers to the Ukraine. Of those 90 I would think only about 50 are currentlly available for fire missions. The Ukraine needs 400 to 500 155mm howitzers.

Last but not least the Ukraine need Patriot Anti air and anti missile systems to deny Ukrainian Air Space to the Russians. With out control of the airspace over the battle field, what few modern weapons that we give to Ukraine will be destroyed in a short period of time.

strange .. but where is the analysis of data on the level of drug addiction in Ukraine and on the available mobilization reserve? I understand you😉 If we analyze these data for Ukraine, then the situation is not just difficult, the situation is catastrophic!
By the way, regarding Russia, your calculations are completely meaningless. there is no mobilization in Russia. Russia deployed only 100 combat tactical groups for the special operation. this is slightly more than 10% of the size of the Russian army. what shortage of people are you talking about? come back from the world of illusions. Russia does what it sees fit and as it sees fit.

about HIMARs, there are no longer 20, but about 11. about three axes a couple of weeks ago, the Europeans claimed that only 43 of all those delivered remained in combat condition. By the way, one of them is now at the “Army 2022” training in Moscow. in the trophy section.

regarding air defense, the supply of 10-20 Patriot systems will not change the situation. this is an object air defense that will be suppressed almost immediately after switching on. Ukraine already had a layered air defense system. much better than what you suggest. but Ukrainian air defense ended in the first days of the conflict. your idea with the Patriot, in fact, is not much different from the delivery of 20 HIMARs.
