President Joe Biden has a habit of struggling to find his way off a stage.
He knows it, his team knows it, his wife knows it, and the world knows it.
That could explain, then, why the president confidently walked off set during an interview on MSNBC, as if to show the world he does know how to leave.
The problem? The interview was live, the camera hadn’t panned away from him yet, and he chose to walk behind the interviewer, right as she told viewers, “Don’t go anywhere.”
Instead of waiting until the commercial break like literally every other interviewee on television, the president decided to stand up and leave after 20 minutes of softball questions from MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace.
The interview could have been an important moment for the Biden campaign, too. It was an opportunity for Biden to show the world that he’s not cognitively impaired, that he can answer questions without a teleprompter, and that he is willing to talk to the media.
He even had easy questions from a friendly interviewer – but any benefits that might have come with the interview were quickly undone by his bizarre on-set behavior.
During the interview, the president was asked about the Thursday, June 29th, ruling from the Supreme Court that banned racial discrimination in higher education admissions. The ruling found that it was unconstitutional for American universities to admit students based on diversity and racial quotas.
The Biden administration opposed the decision, and the president told MSNBC during the interview that “the vast majority of the American people don’t agree with a lot of the decisions this court is making.”
In a moment of lucidity, however, the president argued against packing the courts – something former President Donald Trump warned that a hypothetical future Biden administration would consider if he won in 2020.
“I think it’s a mistake,” Biden said about the prospect of installing more liberal judges onto the court.
“if we do start the process of expanding the court, we’re going to politicize it maybe forever in a way that is not healthy.”
Perhaps the Biden administration knows, then, that the ruling was based on constitutional analysis and not on politics, as he and many of his administration’s top figures have claimed. Or maybe the president was simply telling the truth; expanding the court, after all, would set a dangerous precedent.
