Miles Taylor Now Says Trump Can Win In 2024 – Miles Taylor, the former chief of staff of the United States Department of Homeland Security, claims in a new book that former President Donald Trump could beat President Joe Biden in 2024 – a stark warning for Democrats who have long praised Taylor for his past criticism of the former president.
Taylor hit the headlines in 2020 when he revealed that he was the man behind an anonymous New York Times opinion piece titled, “I Am Part of the Resistance inside the Trump Administration,” and a 2019 book titled “A Warning.”
How He Thinks Donald Trump Can Win
In a new book, Blowback: A Warning to Save Democracy from the Next Trump, Taylor offers new insights into his time in the Trump administration, and argues that the former president may actually have a shot at forming a second administration in January, 2025.
Speaking to reporters at The Guardian as he promotes the new book, Taylor expressed concern that President Joe Biden hasn’t done enough to convince the American public that he is the best option in 2024.
“There’s been a number of polls that show the ex-president beating Joe Biden by several points,” Taylor said. “It would be hubris to say, ‘Oh, no, we would beat him again a second time.’ Actually, I don’t think that. If the election was held today, I think Donald Trump would defeat Joe Biden, and that really concerns me.”
In the book, Taylor also offers a look at how the former president attempted to secure the southern border, outlining solutions that he says the former president floated when he was told that farmers needed to be able to cross areas where he proposed a wall be constructed. According to Taylor, Trump suggested that ranchers who needed to get their cattle over the border should be given “ladders,” arguing that doors would make the wall less secure.
“They can use ladders to get to the other side, but not doors. You could use small fire trucks. Call the local fire stations, and use the ladders on their trucks to help them get over,” Trump reportedly said, according to Taylor’s book.
Combined with Taylor’s suggestion to The Guardian that Democrats form a coalition with so-called “moderate” Republicans like Liz Cheney – something he claimed would be the “single best” way to beat Trump in 2024 – and it could be argued that Taylor’s view of the former president and the issues that motivate people to vote for him is out-of-step with the rest of the American public.
Polls have repeatedly shown that most Americans see an “invasion” at the southern border and want to see more to address it. With that in mind, Taylor could well be right that Trump is on track to beat Biden in 2024 – and perhaps the only way Biden could realistically beat Trump, at least by more than just a small margin, is to address concerns that will give voters a reason to turn out for the former president.
