Bad Idea? Joe Biden Will Not Be on New Hampshire Ballot

The Joe Biden campaign says it will not file to be on the primary ballot because New Hampshire refused to comply with Democratic Party rules.

The Joe Biden campaign says it will not file to be on the primary ballot because New Hampshire refused to comply with Democratic Party rules. Consequently, Joe Biden’s name will be absent from the primary ballot in New Hampshire when it takes place next year. Newly adopted Democratic National Committee (DNC) rules place South Carolina first.

Biden owes his march to the White House in 2020 to his win in South Carolina at the behest of former House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) This move likely rewards South Carolina for its role.

The Biden campaign claims it is “obligated” to comply with the rules.

GOP State Officials Block DNC Demands

New Hampshire’s Republican Secretary of State David M. Scanlan said he would not modify the primary election calendar to comply with the DNC calendar. The DNC voted to move South Carolina’s primary to Feb. 3, 2024, three days ahead of New Hampshire’s scheduled primary.

Iowa also lost its early-state position under the revised DNC rules. New Hampshire has had a law for at least 50 years that requires it to be the first in the nation. The GOP controls both houses of the state legislature and the governor’s mansion, which makes any modifications non-starters.

Some speculate that Biden’s health and age contributed to the decision to change the primary. Having voters too close to the president could have exposed him to further criticism that he is unfit for another term. With Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s decision to run as an independent, Biden only faces a longshot challenge from New Age guru Marianne Williamson.

As a result, Biden campaign chairwoman Julie Chavez Rodriguez told New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley that the president would not submit a declaration of his candidacy before New Hampshire’s Friday ballot deadline.

However, Biden’s name will appear on the New Hampshire ballot for next year’s general election.

New Hampshire Likely Still Backs Biden

“The president is incredibly grateful for the support that Granite Staters have shown him both as a candidate for office and as president of the United States,” Chavez Rodriguez wrote in her letter to Buckley.

Buckley replied to the letter saying, “The reality is that Joe Biden will win the New Hampshire First-in-the-Nation Primary in January, win renomination in Chicago and will be re-elected next November.” He continued: “New Hampshire voters know and trust Joe Biden.”

The New Hampshire Republican Party lambasted the Democrats with a post on X saying, “Joe Biden doesn’t care about the granite state, our traditions, or our voters.”

Democrats have knocked New Hampshire in their drive to become a party dominated by animus against white Americans due to the fact its population is largely white. This contrasts with South Carolina, where the Democratic electorate is largely black and minority.
