Synopsis: French-supplied Mirage 2000-5 fighters in Ukraine have begun operational missions equipped with advanced MICA air-to-air missiles, marking a significant capability leap from the previously used Matra Magic IIs.

-Delivered in early 2025, these modernized fourth-generation jets feature Thales RDY radar and glass cockpits, allowing for both beyond-visual-range and short-range engagements.

-The integration of MICA missiles, alongside SCALP cruise missiles, has bolstered Ukraine’s air defense, with pilots reporting a 98% success rate in intercepting Russian Kh-101 missiles and Shahed drones.

Ukraine’s Mirage 2000-5 Fighters Are Now Hunting with Advanced MICA Missiles

Recent reports and photographs have shown that French-supplied Dassault Mirage 2000-5 fighters supplied by France have begun employing MICA air-to-air missiles in operational missions

Prior to this development, Ukrainian Mirage 2000-5s had only been using Matra Magic II infrared missiles, which have been very effective against Russian drones and cruise missiles.

The Dassault Mirage 2000-5 is an advanced, fourth-generation French multirole fighter, an upgraded version of the classic Mirage 2000, featuring sophisticated Thales RDY radar, a glass cockpit, HOTAS controls, and the ability to fire MICA missiles, making it highly capable for both air-to-air and ground attack missions, with recent notable deliveries to Ukraine for air defense.

The Mirage features upgraded Thales RDY radar (Pulse-Doppler), Thales VEH 3020 head-up display (HUD), and multifunction displays, night-vision compatible glass cockpit with Hands-On Throttle-And-Stick (HOTAS) controls.

Integration of MICA (Missile d’Interception, de Combat et d’Autodéfense) air-to-air missiles (radar and infrared versions) and laser designator pods for ground attacks.

France supplied Mirage 2000-5F jets to Ukraine in 2025 as part of military aid. Ukrainian pilots report high success rates against Russian drones and missiles, leveraging the jet’s agility and advanced sensors.

MICA (Missile d’Interception, de Combat et d’Autodéfense) Missiles?

MICA is the multi-mission air-to-air missile system for the Rafale and the latest versions of Mirage 2000-5 combat aircraft. MICA has a dual role with both BVR (Beyond Visual Range) and SR (Short-Range Within Visual Range) combat situations, and exhibits very high performance in both roles.

The MICA missile’s range varies by version, with the air-to-air radar-guided MICA EM reaching up to 80 km (50 miles) and the infrared MICA IR around 60 km (37 miles), while vertical-launched versions (VL MICA) have shorter ranges, about 20 km (12 miles), with the new MICA NG offering increased range (around 40 percent more) and stealth capabilities for deployment from 2026.

It isn’t known whether the MICA missiles were supplied as part of the Mirage 2000-5 aircraft procurement or as part of a subsequent aid package from the French government.

However, the introduction of the MICA missiles has significantly increased the capabilities of Ukraine’s Air Force and air defense capabilities, particularly in response to Russia’s increasing use of Kh-101 cruise missiles and Shahed drones.

The Matra R550 Magic 2 Is Also Very Effective:

The Matra R550 Magic 2 is a French short-range, air-to-air missile developed by Matra. It is an infrared-homing air-to-air missile. It is an advanced version of the original R550 Magic.

It was designed in 1968 as an alternative to the American-built AIM-9 Sidewinder, primarily for the French Air Force and Navy. This missile is renowned for its infrared homing guidance system, which is highly effective against heat-emitting targets, typically jet engines.

However, the technological leap of the MICA over the Magic II not only increases the range and accuracy of the weapons system but also aligns Ukraine’s capabilities with those of other European air forces operating these fighters.

The Mirage 2000-5 is a modernized, potent fighter that significantly enhances the air defense and offensive capabilities of nations operating it, as demonstrated by Ukraine’s recent use.

France modified and upgraded the aircraft not only to use the MICA missiles but also to expand its multi-role capabilities by accepting SCALP cruise missiles and AASM Hammer Bombs for strike missions.

These weapons are bolstering their capabilities against Russian threats alongside F-16s. These fourth-generation jets, upgraded with advanced radar and electronic warfare systems, are proving highly effective against the Russian threats faced by Ukraine.

The first Mirage 2000-5 fighter was delivered by France in February of last year, as the French Air Force was phasing out the type in favor of the Rafale. Just one month later, the aircraft shot down the first of many Russian Kh-101 missiles during an attack.

Ukrainian Air Force pilots have reported that Mirage aircraft have been incredibly effective at shooting down Russian missiles and drones with a 98 percent effective rate.

“The effectiveness of intercepting enemy drones and missiles on this aircraft is 98%. These are impressive numbers,” said a pilot sitting in the cockpit of his Mirage fighter.
