Former President Donald Trump has posted to Truth Social claims that the Georgia grand jury investigating his potential involvement in attempts to overthrow the 2020 election has exonerated him.
“Thank you to the Special Grand Jury in the Great State of Georgia for your Patriotism & Courage. Total exoneration. The USA is very proud of you!!!” Trump wrote. “The long awaited important section of the Georgia report, which do not even mention President Trump’s name, have nothing to do with the President because President Trump did absolutely nothing wrong.”
Trump continued: “The President participated in two perfect phone calls regarding election integrity in Georgia, which he is entitled to do – in fact, as President, it was President Trump’s Constitutional duty to ensure election safety, security, and integrity…President Trump will always keep fighting for true and honest elections in America!”
How can Donald Trump be this dumb? Where is his legal teams? The problem of course is that the Georgia Special Grand Jury has done no such thing.
The grand jury’s findings so far
We don’t yet know the grand jury’s ultimate decision: whether to charge Trump criminally. And Donald Trump doesn’t know either, so his post about being totally exonerated is pure nonsense.
What we do know is that the grand jury found, unanimously, that Georgia’s 2020 presidential vote was kosher, that the vote had not been fraudulent as Trump and his team had claimed.
“The grand jury heard extensive testimony on the subject of alleged election fraud from poll workers, investigators, technical experts, and State of Georgia employees and officials, as well as from persons still claiming that such fraud took place,” an excerpt from the grand jury report said.
“We find by a unanimous vote that no widespread fraud took place in the Georgia 2020 presidential election that could result in overturning the election.”
We also know that the grand jury believes some of its witnesses committed perjury.
“A majority of the grand jury believes that perjury may have been committed by one or more witnesses testifying before it,” the grand jury report said. “The grand jury recommends that the district attorney seek appropriate indictments for such crimes where the evidence is compelling.”
Again, nothing about an exoneration.
Twitter reacts to Donald Trump and that claim
Predictably, Twitter blew up at Trump’s claim of being exonerated.
Rob Reiner, a liberal activist who also happens to be a filmmaker responsible for a few of the best movies ever made (i.e., Stand By Me, This Is Spinal Tap, Misery, A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally) weighed in. “Georgia Grand Jury says looks like members of Trump’s inner circle committed perjury. And Trump’s claim of voter fraud was nonexistent. Trump claims he was totally exonerated. As always Trump is full of s***,” Reiner wrote.
“As dumb as [Trump] is, even he knows this is BS. But he is cunning enough to know the cultists will buy it,” attorney Ron Filipkowski wrote. And that’s probably true. Trump knows he hasn’t been exonerated in any way shape or form; his claim of exoneration is obviously calculating, it serves some purposes, at least in Trump’s mind.
At minimum Trump has succeeded in riling up liberal Twitter, which Trump knows is a win.
Few things endear Trump to his base like the way liberals hate Trump. If there’s one thing we can give credit to Donald Trump for, it’s understanding what his base wants and giving it to them.
So, as absurd as Trump’s claim of total exoneration seems, as absurd as it is, there is likely a calculating reason behind it.
