Liz Cheney: Her Political Career ‘Is On Life Support’

Liz Cheney may be out of office, but following Trump’s indictment in Manhattan, her support among GOP voters climbed from just 5.3% to 10.3% in a Trafalgar Group poll.

Liz Cheney Won’t Stay in the Political Wilderness For Long – In a 1980 interview with Barbara Walters on ABC’s 20/20, former-President Richard Nixon paraphrased from General Douglas MacArthur’s “Old Soldiers Never Die” speech (which was actually taken from a soldier’s folklore song of the same name), and said, “Old politicians usually die, but they never fade away.”

In the case of former Wyoming representative-at-large Liz Cheney, her political career may be on life support – as it is too early to truly call it dead – but she has certainly not faded away. She may have infamously been defeated in the Cowboy State’s GOP primary last year, but it wouldn’t be fair to suggest that she is in the “wilderness,” or at least not deep into it.

For one, she’s stuck around the D.C. area, and earlier this year and joined the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics. Her appointment will run through the conclusion of the 2023 fall semester.

“I am delighted to be joining the UVA Center for Politics as a Professor of Practice. Preserving our constitutional republic is the most important work of our time, and our nation’s young people will play a crucial role in this effort. I look forward to working with students and colleagues at the Center to advance the important work they and others at the University of Virginia are doing to improve the health of democracy here and around the world,” said Cheney.

“There are many threats facing our system of government and I hope my work with the Center for Politics and the broader community at the University of Virginia will contribute to finding lasting solutions that not only preserve but strengthen our democracy,” Cheney added.

Approval Rising, Book Coming

Cheney may be out of office, but following Trump’s indictment in Manhattan, her support among GOP voters climbed from just 5.3% to 10.3% in a Trafalgar Group poll.

Her numbers still trail Trump by a wide margin, but should Cheney decide to make a run for the White House, she has more support than former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who has officially announced her run and has just 3.7% support as of early April.

In addition to prepping for her teaching gig, Cheney had put pen to paper.

Her memoir – described as a “warning” – will be coming out this fall. The book, Oath and Honor, reportedly chronicles her estrangement from Trump and the GOP in the aftermath of the January 6 siege on the U.S. Capitol.

“The last two years have shown us once again that our constitutional republic is not self-sustaining,” Cheney said in a statement released Tuesday by Little, Brown and Company, which will publish her book on November 14. “It survives only because of the courage and honor of individual Americans. When history looks back on this time, each elected official will have to answer the questions: Did we do our duty? Were we faithful to our oath of office?”

The book could certainly help her return from the political wilderness.

And as Liz Cheney now works not all that far from the actual site of the Battle of the Wilderness fought during the American Civil War, she may be ready to be an active combatant in the GOP’s looming civil war.
