Democrats Have a Plan to Save Kamala Harris

Democrats want Vice President Kamala Harris to be front and center in the debate over abortion rights. They see last year’s overturning of Roe v. Wade as a wedge issue they can leverage in 2024.

Kamala Harris Becoming Point Person on Abortion Rights – Democrats want Vice President Kamala Harris to be front and center in the debate over abortion rights. They see last year’s overturning of Roe v. Wade as a wedge issue they can leverage in 2024.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told MSNBC that the lesson from last year’s midterm elections is that female voters care about abortion access. They were responsible for keeping Democrat losses to a minimum, she said.

Harris has become the butt of Republican jokes due to her lack of articulateness. Her party hopes to capture North Carolina in 2024, a state that went to Donald Trump in 2020.

“The majority of Americans, I do believe, agree that one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree that the government should not have the right to tell her what to do with her body,” Harris said at a Charlotte, N.C. event commemorating the anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

She recorded a video for the women’s magazine ELLE supporting abortion rights that was posted on Twitter.

“I am here in Charlotte, North Carolina one year after the Dobbs decision came down which wiped out the rights of Roe v. Wade to bring everybody together from all backgrounds and walks of life to stand for this fundamental right of a woman to make decisions about their own body and not have their government tell them what to do,” Harris said. “We’re talking about the importance of voting because ultimately it’s a right that Congress can put back in place. We’re talking with folks about the importance of organizing and talking with your friends and talking with your neighbors about why this is an important issue.”

Strategists Look for a Key Issue

Democratic strategists found that Harris lacked a key issue that she could run on, so abortion was chosen.

“The stars didn’t align for the American people, but they aligned for our strategy,” the senior aide said.

The overturning of Roe gave Harris something she could run on a year ago. She was on her plane to an event in Springfield, Ill., when the news came out about the decision.

“When [the decision] came down, I remember saying to her, ‘I hope you will continue to fight and use your bully pulpit to help us elevate this issue because right now we need your voice more and more,’ said longtime Democratic strategist and outside Harris adviser Minyon Moore. “She didn’t skip a beat.”

This marked a shift from Harris’ own campaign for president because she could not justify what her campaign was about.

Democrats Downplay Kamala Harris Effect on Campaign

Some Democrats are quick to downplay the negative impact that Kamala Harris would have on Biden’s re-election, considering that most Americans do not vote for the man on top because of who there running mate is. A recent poll that showed Harris was the most unpopular vice president in history but also showed Biden beating Donald Trump.

“In that very same poll that you reference, it shows that Joe Biden is beating Donald Trump by 4 points,” Democratic Florida Rep. Jared Moskowitz replied.

Moskowitz added: “In a head-to-head matchup with the leading Republican contender right now, in that very same poll, Joe Biden’s winning by 4 points. That is the American people weighing in on the job that the Biden administration is doing.”
