I’ve said it before, but I’ll repeat it since it seems especially relevant: Representative Lauren Boebert is a mess.
What is Lauren Boebert Doing Now?
Lauren Boebert, the firebrand conservative from Colorado’s Third District, is forcing a vote to impeach President Joe Biden — leaving House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to scratch his head.
“Speaker Kevin McCarthy urged House Republicans to vote against the resolution brought forward by GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado forcing a vote to impeach President Joe Biden this week, arguing now is not the right time,” CNN reported. “McCarthy argued that Republicans should let committee investigations play out and warned that jumping to impeachment now could threaten their slim majority.”
Boebert Introduces Resolution to Impeach
Boebert’s privileged resolution to impeach Biden cites a “dereliction of duty” and “abuse of power” over his handling of the U.S.-Mexico border. Obviously, the resolution is a long-shot, with little hope of passing.
Yet in introducing the articles of impeachment under a privileged resolution, Boebert has circumvented McCarthy and forced a vote. “By bypassing the usual process for bringing legislation to a full House vote, Boebert’s action would force lawmakers to vote n the measure in the next days,” the Washington Post reported.
McCarthy is wringing his hands. “What majority do we want to be,” McCarthy asked. “give it right back in two years or hold it for a decade and make real change?”
Added the Post: “McCarthy warned the conference Wednesday morning that continuing to force vulnerable members, many of whom represent seats Biden handily won in 2020, to take such votes could threaten Republicans’ fragile five-seat majority.”
But Boebert, like a bull in a China shop, is going to jack up McCarthy’s agenda. “President Biden has pursued this open border agenda purposefully and willfully, circumventing every safeguard, check, and balance required by law, resulting in mass illegal immigration into the United States to the detriment of the American people,” Boebert said. Okay, lady.
Boebert is likely acting out in response to the debt ceiling deal that McCarthy cut with Biden last month. The far right was incensed about the deal, which did not cut spending as drastically as Boebert and company desired.
The White House responded. “Instead of working with President Biden on solutions to the issues that matter most to the American people, like creating jobs, lowering costs and strengthening health care, extreme House Republicans are staging baseless political stunts that do nothing to help real people and only serve to get themselves attention,” Ian Sams, the White House Counsel’s Office spokesman, said in a statement.
Boebert’s Own Seat in Jeopardy
One of the vulnerable seats McCarthy is referring to belongs to Boebert herself. Boebert squeaked out a victory last fall by just a few hundred votes. It was the closest House race in the country. Now, Democrat Adam Frisch, who took Boebert to the brink, is mounting a campaign to finally oust Boebert from her seat.
Frisch was unknown last time and received poor funding. That won’t be the case this time around. And if Boebert keeps playing games, like forcing a vote to impeach Biden, she’s just going to solidify national-level support for Frisch.
