Donald Trump Gets Handed Even More Legal Challenges

The reports earlier this week that a criminal indictment of former President Donald Trump was imminent turned out to be correct – the former president was indeed indicted on federal charges Thursday night.

The actual indictment has not yet been unsealed, but media outlets, including the New York Times, reported that Trump’s charges include “willfully retaining national defense secrets in violation of the Espionage Act, making false statements, and a conspiracy to obstruct justice.”

This is Trump’s second indictment of the year, following the charges in New York this spring on state charges of falsifying business records, but this time it is a federal indictment, making Trump the first former president of the United States ever to face a federal indictment.

It does not appear anyone besides Trump has been indicted.

The indictment was brought in South Florida, less than a week after it was first reported that a grand jury had been empaneled in that jurisdiction. A grand jury had been serving for months in Washington, in connection with the case.

Trump remains under investigation both in Georgia, in connection with his attempts to overturn that state’s presidential election result in 2020, and by the special counsel, in relation to January 6 and his attempted overturning of the election.

The indictments come as Trump is once again running for president and is the frontrunner on the Republican side. It also raises questions about logistics, and whether Trump will have to face a trial while he’s running for president. Trump’s trial in the New York case is scheduled to begin next March.

“The corrupt Biden Administration has informed my attorneys that I have been Indicted, seemingly over the Boxes Hoax, even though Joe Biden has 1850 Boxes at the University of Delaware, additional Boxes in Chinatown, D.C., with even more Boxes at the University of Pennsylvania, and documents strewn all over his garage floor where he parks his Corvette, and which is “secured” by only a garage door that is paper thin, and open much of the time,” Trump said on Truth Social Thursday night.

He continued with a long run-on sentence.

“ I never thought it possible that such a thing could happen to a former President of the United States, who received far more votes than any sitting President in the History of our Country, and is currently leading, by far, all Candidates, both Democrat and Republican, in Polls of the 2024 Presidential Election. I AM AN INNOCENT MAN!”

Trump also confirmed that he had been summoned to appear at the federal courthouse in Miami on Tuesday afternoon. Per CNN, Miami-Dade police have told the federal government that they are willing to help out with the logistics on Tuesday.

“The Miami-Dade Police Department has not received any federal requests for security support,” police spokesperson Alvaro Zabaleta said in a statement as reported by CNN. “Along with our partners at the City of Miami Police Department, we are prepared to provide any assistance, support and resources that may be needed.”

Other Republicans, including the ones who are running against him, appear to mostly be taking Trump’s side. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis blasted the Department of Justice for what he called “uneven application of the law.” Candidate Vivek Ramaswamy even promised to pardon Trump, should he be elected president.

The one Republican candidate who actually broke with that consensus was Asa Hutchinson, the former Arkansas governor who is running a long shot bid for president. Hutchinson issued a press release Thursday calling on Trump, in light of the indictment, to drop out of the race.

“With the news that Donald Trump has been indicted for the second time, our country finds itself in a position that weakens our democracy,” Hutchinson said. “While Donald Trump is entitled to the presumption of innocence, the ongoing criminal proceedings will be a major distraction. This reaffirms the need for Donald Trump to respect the office and end his campaign.”
