Former President Donald Trump likes talking about lots of things; however, the impeachment inquiry of his successor, President Joe Biden, does not seem to be one of them.
Trump survived two impeachment referrals and has been charged with 91 felony counts, yet he seems absent from the Joe Biden impeachment debate.
Trump accused Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss, whom he appointed based on recommendations from that state’s two Democratic senators, of going easy on Hunter Biden.
“This, the gun charge, is the only crime that Hunter Biden committed that does not implicate Crooked Joe Biden,” Trump said, likely noting that a thorough investigation of the network of shell companies connected to Hunter Biden and the president’s brother Jim Biden could implicate Joe Biden.
Democrats have painted the impeachment inquiry as being about getting revenge on Democrats for the two Trump impeachments. It would therefore be in Trump’s best interest to remain silent lest he validate the Democrats’ narrative.
Trump Publicly Indifferent on Impeachment Inquiry
“That’s up to them if they want to do impeachment or impeachment inquiry,” Trump said of House Republicans impeaching Biden in an interview with Megyn Kelly that aired Thursday. “I have no idea whether they will or not, we do have a lot of other things. But it’s quite important, and they did it to me.”
Trump has been in touch with members of Congress, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor-Greene and Elise Stefanik, but The Washington Post reports that he has not actively lobbied for anything other than his own exoneration from his two impeachments. Speaker Kevin McCarthy reportedly sounded sympathetic but made no commitments.
Objections to Biden Impeachment Inquiry is Partisanship
“Speaker-in-name-only Kevin McCarthy opened this baseless impeachment inquiry, at the behest of Donald Trump, centered on the same, debunked lies from four years ago in a bid to help Trump’s political campaign,” Biden campaign spokesman Ammar Moussa said in a statement.
The impeachment inquiry is not an impeachment. It has been triggered due to the Biden administration’s refusal to cooperate with congressional oversight of the president’s finances and those of his family. Congressional investigators have raised questions pertaining to links between the Biden family’s businesses and foreign intelligence operations aimed at influencing Biden and U.S. policy.
What Would Democrats Say if The Accused’s Name Were Trump?
If Trump had done the same exact things that Biden allegedly did, Democrats would be the ones calling for Trump’s financial statements. They would be demanding answers about the allegation found in the FBI form FD-1023 from 2020 that alleged the president of the United States accepted a $5 million bribe in exchange for having the prosecutor general of a foreign country fired.
Democrats would want that investigated further if the person’s name was “Trump.” But because the person’s name is “Biden” they do not. Or had Don Jr. taken millions of dollars from business partners linked to Chinese intelligence or Donald Sr. met with a business partner of Don Jr.’s who had connections with a front for Chinese intelligence, they would be demanding answers. Or if an email showed that Don Jr. was going to give Donald Sr. 10 percent of the proceeds stemming from a business transaction with that Chinese intelligence front company, would the Democrats have let Donald Sr. off the hook?
What if Don Jr. had been caught in a recording saying he was representing the “spy chief of China”?
Or if Donald Sr. dined on two occasions with his son’s business partners with ties to the Russian mafia and the Federal Security Bureau (FSB), they would not have let it go anymore than they let go of the Trump Tower story that was later debunked in congressional testimony.
Democrats in power impeached Trump because he wanted answers about the then-former vice president with regard to what seems to have been a cover-up of unethical activities. The first Trump impeachment was part of the coverup intended to protect Joe Biden from scrutiny.
The Democrats’ lack of interest in investigating Biden boils down to tribalism.
Biden Meets Pelosi Precedent on Impeachment Inquiry
When Nancy Pelosi announced the impeachment inquiry into Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in July 2019 she said it was a “matter of national security.” The press reported at the time that her opening of an inquiry did not necessarily mean that Trump would be impeached.
Isn’t it a matter of national security when a member of the president’s family, whom the president relies on closely, takes money from fronts for foreign intelligence agencies? The president potentially received money from those same fronts and his political actions seem to line up with the interests of those intelligence services. If no evidence is found in Joe Biden’s financial records or the bribe allegation cannot be corroborated, then he will skate free. In either case, the voters deserve to know. In any case, further and deeper investigations are warranted.
This clearly meets the precedent set by the Pelosi impeachment inquiry.
