Russia Exploits Patriot Shortage In Deadly Kyiv Attack: At least four people, including a three-year-old boy, were killed in Russian attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight into Saturday, August 8, as Moscow launched another barrage of ballistic missiles and drones designed to exploit a growing weakness in Ukraine’s air defenses.
The attack came only three days after an even larger ballistic missile assault on Kyiv killed at least 17 people, proving that Russia is deliberately using weapons the Kremlin knows Kyiv is unable to defend against. Ukraine’s well-documented shortage of Patriot interceptor missiles has left the country vulnerable to escalating Russian strikes, just as Ukrainian forces proved they were capable of conducting long-range and devastating strikes against critical Russian infrastructure. The news also comes as Russia expands its procurement of North Korean missiles and increases its own domestic production.

The latest strike, and those that have come in recent days, mean Kyiv now faces a tough choice: continue its long-range strike campaign but face more devastating ballistic missile strikes, or cease the campaign and make major territorial concessions to Russia.
Four Killed Overnight
Three members of one family were killed when Russian drones struck their home in Pukhivka, in the Brovary district northeast of Kyiv. The victims were a three-year-old boy and his grandparents. The child’s parents, his 15-year-old brother, and a neighbor who came to help were also hospitalized.
A fourth person was reportedly killed in Kyiv, where Russia launched six Iskander-M ballistic missiles against the capital city.
The Ukrainian Air Force said that none of the ballistic missiles were intercepted.
Russia also launched 151 drones and used S-400 surface-to-air missiles in ground-attack roles. Ukrainian defenses destroyed or electronically suppressed 135 drones, while missile and drone impacts were recorded at 12 locations.
The attack also extended well beyond Kyiv, with Ukrainian authorities reporting strikes across much of the rest of the country.
Zelenskyy Says Putin Is Exploiting Interceptor Shortage
In a statement published on X, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Moscow is deliberately exploiting Ukraine’s Patriot interceptor shortage.
“Last night, Russia killed three people in Pukhivka, Kyiv region, with drone strikes – a grandfather, a grandmother, and their grandson. The boy was only three years old. Four more people were hospitalized: the child’s parents, his 15-year-old brother, and a neighbor who came to the family’s aid and was wounded in a double-tap strike. The victims suffered thermal burns and shrapnel wounds. My condolences… It was an ordinary residential building. The Russians could not have been unaware of this. There was also a strike involving six ballistic missiles against civilian infrastructure in Kyiv. As of now, one person has been reported dead. My condolences to the family and loved ones. The Donetsk, Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, and Poltava regions also came under attack,” Zelenskyy said.
He also called on Europe and the United States to do more to help Ukraine against ballistic missiles, and described a common intent to end the war.
“Europe, America, and Ukraine have long wanted to stop this Russian war. Only Putin doesn’t want to, and he’s desperately clinging to his ballistic missiles and drones to keep the war going. More pressure is needed. New sanctions that will prevent the production of these ballistic missiles. And we definitely need more protection for our people,” he said.
Zelenskyy also repeated prior calls for his allies to urgently send more Patriot interceptors, which he said are currently sitting uselessly in warehouses.
“Anti-ballistic capabilities, interceptor missiles for Patriot, SAMP/T, NASAMS, Hawk, and our F-16s – all of this works and helps protect lives when it is here, in Ukraine, rather than sitting in warehouses thousands of kilometers away from Russian strikes against life. I thank everyone who shows leadership and, despite everything, provides new air defense packages,” he said.
The problem for Ukraine, however, is that its own allies need those interceptors for deterrence and defense purposes – and the United States has expended thousands of munitions in just the last several months in Iran.
Ukraine Says Patriots Came Too Late
Zelenskyy is not only calling for more Patriot deliveries but also insists that Ukraine be granted a license to build them domestically.
Speaking at a press conference in Belgrade, Serbia, on Saturday, August 8, Zelenskyy said that he repeatedly asked former President Joe Biden for a license during the first year of the Russian invasion.
“I asked him repeatedly. If we had received the licenses back then, we would already be producing Patriots for everyone, including Europe,” Zelenskyy said.
The comments have the potential to be particularly persuasive today given the current global shortage. President Donald Trump indicated last month that the United States was prepared to grant Ukraine the license, but soon backed out, suggesting that negotiations are still underway and that it is not certain the license will be granted.
