Donald Trump Has Big Dreams for Marjorie Taylor Greene

If Marjorie Taylor Greene does decide to run for the Senate in Georgia, she’ll have to wait a while. The state has two Democratic senators, Sen. Jon Ossoff and Sen. Raphael Warnock. The two men are next up for re-election respectively, in 2026 and 2028.

Trump implies MTG should run for Senate: While Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has been rumored as a possible vice president on Trump’s ticket in 2024, the ex-president appeared to push her for another office at his rally this weekend.

Trump Has a Plan for Marjorie Taylor Greene

If he manages to dodge multiple indictment threats as well as a competitive primary contest and once again stand as the Republican nominee for president, he’s going to need a new vice president. And one name that has been mentioned as a possible veep for Trump is Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

NBC News reported in January that Greene aspires to the vice presidency, and quoted Steve Bannon as stating that “she sees herself on the shortlist for Trump’s VP.” The Daily Beast, however, speculated that Trump “wouldn’t dare” put Greene on the ticket, since she might overshadow him.

This weekend, Trump appeared to talk up Greene for a different office, the U.S. Senate.

At his rally in Waco, Tex., on Saturday, Trump ripped Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and then declared “they’ve got to get tougher; they’ve got to get like Marjorie Taylor Greene.” Trump then promised to “fight like hell” for Greene while asking her if she’d like to run for the Senate.

Greene, on Twitter, replied that “Republicans do have to get tougher — I agree, Mr. President!!”

If Greene does decide to run for the Senate in Georgia, she’ll have to wait a while. The state has two Democratic senators, Sen. Jon Ossoff and Sen. Raphael Warnock. The two men are next up for re-election respectively, in 2026 and 2028. The Democrats won a pair of Senate races in that state in 2020, in runoffs after the general election, while Warnock defeated Trump’s handpicked candidate Herschel Walker to win a full term in 2022.

Greg Bluestein, a reporter who covers Georgia politics, tweeted over the weekend that Gov. Brian Kemp, a Republican who is mostly a Trump enemy, may run for the Senate against Ossoff in 2026. Kemp also confirmed this week that he’s not running for president in 2024.

“Georgians will decide for themselves who their elected officials are just like they did in 2022—not out-of-state failed career politicians,” Stephen Lawson, a Republican strategist who has worked for former Sen. Kelly Loeffler and likely future Trump opponent Gov. Ron DeSantis, tweeted in reaction to Trump’s floating of Greene.

Was Trump Just Kidding?

Other Georgia political figures downplayed the idea of Marjorie Taylor Greene being elected senator.

“If Marjorie Taylor Greene runs for the U.S. Senate in Georgia, she would have the same problems that Herschel Walker had,” Dillard University Professor Robert Collins told Newsweek. “She is very popular with the base, and they will support her no matter what, but she’s too controversial to get any significant votes from the independent voters.

“The Democrats won the last two US senate races because they were able to get the lion share of those independent swing voters. Marjorie Taylor Greene would max out in the high 40s,” Collins added.

January 6 Jail Visit

Marjorie Taylor Greene, last week, and other Republican lawmakers made a well-publicized visit to a jail in Washington where January 6 defendants are held. One man blew a whistle at Greene while shouting “the Capitol Police were attacked!” and “they need to have long jail sentences!”

Twenty defendants, per the New York Times, are being held at the jail,

“They told us stories of being denied medical treatment,” Greene said of the January 6 defendants being held. “They told us stories of assault. They told us stories of being threatened with rape.”

Another Congresswoman, Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) said that conditions at the facility have improved of late, which she attributed to the Republican takeover of the House of Representatives.

Some Democrats went along with the tour and sought to rebut the GOP’s claims.

“These people tried to overthrow our government,” Rep Robert Garcia (D-CA) said, per the Times. “While Marjorie Taylor Greene wants to treat these folks as pseudocelebrities, these folks are insurrectionists and we can’t forget that.”
