Donald Trump Faces A New Legal Threat

Former President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he received a letter from special counsel Jack Smith, informing him that he is a “target” in an ongoing investigation into the alleged effort to stop the peaceful transfer of power on January 6, 2021.

In a statement issued on his Truth Social platform, the former president said that he received the letter on Sunday night and slammed Smith as “deranged.” The former president also took the opportunity to boast about a straw poll of Turning Point Action conference that gave him more than 85.7% support to become the next GOP presidential nominee.

“On Sunday night, while I was with my family, having just arrived from the Turning Point event in Florida, where I won the Straw Poll against all other Republican candidates with 85.7%, with all polls showing me leading in the Republican Primary by very substantial numbers, almost everyone predicting that I will be the Republican Nominee for President, and as I am leading Democrat Joe Biden in the polls by a lot, HORRIFYING NEWS for our Country was given to me by my attorneys,” Trump wrote.

The former president described how “Deranged Jack Smith” stated that he is the target of the January 6th Grand Jury Investigation, and that he has “a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment.”

Smith did not offer an insight into the crimes that the former president could be charged with, but the investigation has so far focused on reports that the former president considered seizing voting machines from some states to examine whether votes were being counted legitimately. The former president is also likely to be hit with obstruction charges.

Donald Trump: At Least His Documents Case May Be Delayed

While the former president is likely to face yet more charges from federal prosecutors, a federal judge did offer some relatively good news on Tuesday relating to the ongoing classified documents case. Judge Aileen Cannon signaled that December might be too soon for the criminal trial to begin, giving the former president and his legal team more time to prepare.

Trump lawyers recently requested that the case be delayed so that it does not interfere with the 2024 presidential election, arguing that the former president cannot feasibly campaign in an election while also fighting criminal charges brought against him by his opponent’s Justice Department.

Judge Cannon said that she would “promptly” issue an order, following a hearing in Florida’s Fort Pierce federal court during which Trump’s lawyers requested an indefinite delay of the trial date.
