Yellowstone National Park remains open to visitors during the federal government shutdown that began January 31, 2026, after Congress failed to enact full federal appropriations by the budget deadline, according to government budget records and contingency planning guidance.
Official alerts warn, however, that recent extreme winter weather could still have an impact on major roads leading into the park and might also impact access once visitors enter the protected zone. Visitors should, however, expect limited services and staffing for the duration of the shutdown as federal agencies implement contingency operations and await a resolution from Congress.

Winter Weather May Restrict Park Access
Yellowstone — the nation’s first national park, established in 1872 and covering more than 2.2 million acres across Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho — is open year-round by virtue of its design as a public lands unit managed by the National Park Service (NPS).
However, an official statement published on the National Park Service website confirms that some alerts remain in effect, including road closures caused by winter weather.
“Most roads are closed to prepare for commercially-guided snowcoach and snowmobile travel during the winter season, which will begin December 15 (weather depending). The road between the North and Northeast entrances is the only road open year-round to regular vehicles,” the alert reads.
“The only road generally open year-round to regular vehicles is from the North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana, through the park to Cooke City, Montana (via Tower Junction),” official guidance also explains.
Yellowstone has five entrances, and the NPS notes that it takes several hours to drive between each of the entrances. Official guidance on road access can be found here. Park webcams can also be found here, allowing travelers to see current traffic conditions at the North and West entrances to Yellowstone.
Open During Government Shutdowns
According to the Yellowstone National Park Lodges alert page, which is operated by the park’s official concessionaire, Yellowstone will “remain open and accessible, even in the event of a partial federal government shutdown.” The notice adds that lodges, restaurants, gift shops, restrooms, and guest services are expected to remain open and welcoming visitors because NPS is funded through September 2026 and no operational impacts are anticipated from the current shutdown.
That means visitors can still drive park roads that are seasonally open, view geothermal features like Old Faithful, and explore scenic areas. Park entrances are not gated ast night and the park operates 24 hours a day, year-round – though many interior roads, as mentioned, close seasonally due to weather conditions.
Why Services Are Limited
In the current shutdown, agencies entered contingency operations at midnight January 31, 2026, after the House delayed a vote on spending bills, leaving parts of the federal government unfunded.
When the government shuts down as a result of missing appropriations funding, NPS must prioritize essential functions (such as law enforcement, emergency response, and public safety) and may place other operations on hold.
During previous shutdowns, including the extended lapse in late 2025, national parks were ordered to remain partly open, with roads, lookouts, and open-air facilities accessible but visitor center staffing and interpretive programs drastically reduced or closed.
To help keep crucial visitor services running, nonprofits like Yellowstone Forever have historically supported staffing at key visitor centers, allowing the likes of Mammoth Hot Springs, Canyon, and Old Faithful centers to remain open despite federal funding gaps.
Visitors should be warned that even when gates and attractions are still accessible, fewer park rangers and maintenance staff mean many services may still be limited or completely unavailable – including reduced trash removal, closed restrooms in some areas, and limited concession operating hours and fewer informational resources.
The 2026 federal government shutdown began after the appropriations process stalled in Congress, despite earlier bipartisan efforts on some spending bills. Funding for several departments, including those that manage national parks, lapsed as negotiations continued.
During a lapse in federal funding, the Office of Management and Budget directs agencies to use contingency plans that keep “essential” functions operational but furlough many staff deemed “non-essential.” This generally includes law enforcement and emergency personnel in parks but excludes many administrative, interpretive, and support positions.
Historically during shutdowns, national parks have remained physically open even as staffing dropped by more than half and visitor centers, ranger programs, and other services were suspended or severely limited.
Advocacy groups have warned that parks left open with minimal personnel face increased risks to both visitors and the natural environment.
