Can Joe Biden Actually Win in 2024? It Depends on What’s There – In an op-ed for the Guardian on Monday, former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich questioned whether Joe Biden is actually a viable candidate for 2024.

Joe Biden and Age Questions

Reich addressed the job Joe Biden has done to date and suggested that if he feels up to it, Biden should run again.

However, Reich also confronted the very old elephant in the room, namely that Biden would be 86 at the end of his second term.

“That’s deeply worrying, given what we know about the natural decline of the human brain,” Reich wrote while stating that it wasn’t meant to be an “ageist” prejudice, but also noted that “the American presidency is physically and mentally grueling, even for people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s.”

Reich said that Biden’s age would certainly be debated.

This is true if Donald Trump is able to mount a successful comeback and secures the Republican nomination. Still, Biden’s age could become even greater should he face a young candidate – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis now seems like a front-runner and is just 44 now.

Voters may be ready to pass the torch to the next generation.

Biden had said before the holidays that he’d use the time to make a final call about whether he will actually seek reelection, and by all indications, he will run again.

However, he won’t make any formal announcement until after next month’s State of the Union address. Aides have suggested Joe Biden wants to give the speech as the president and not as a candidate.

Classified Documents Won’t Go Away

The bigger issue would be the issue of classified documents. With additional files found just last Friday, Biden has found himself on the defensive with falling poll numbers.

“I think you’re gonna find there’s nothing there,” he told reporters last week. “I have no regrets … There’s no there there.”

Even some in his own party might disagree. There is something there as the United States Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed special counsel Robert Hur to lead the investigation into Biden, and additional documents keep turning up.

Even worse is that the first tranche of at least 10 classified documents was found less than a week before the midterms but not disclosed to the American people.

In fact, it was only when CBS News reported that a special counsel was being considered that Biden acknowledged that the documents were found at his former officer at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement.

Biden’s failure to disclose that the documents had been found – before the election and months after Biden castigated former President Donald Trump’s mishandling of documents – has the making of a cover-up.

The documents aren’t likely to tip the scales for Biden in an election that is still nearly more than a year and a half away, but it is a distraction that makes it hard for the sitting president to tout his accomplishments. Instead, he could find himself the target of a lengthy investigation and the bigger concern should be what else it uncovers.

If there is really is no there there, then Biden may not have anything to worry about. But if something is there, then all bets are off.
