The war in Ukraine won’t end anytime soon.
And yet, despite incredible odds, Kyiv is going toe to toe with Putin’s military machine.
Social media is showing us time and time again how that keeps occurring.
Social Media Sets the Scene in Ukraine
A video shared on Telegram last week shows the process the Ukrainian military follows when it takes out Russian tanks.
The clip shows a Russian T-90M tank parked among piles of rubble in a rural field.
The tank appears to be abandoned, parked as it is on uneven ground, and the video clip shares some information about the vehicle.
The clip, created by the Ukrainian military, shows a T-90M “Proryv,” which is one of Russia’s best main battle tanks.
The tanks were first delivered to the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in 2020.
While they have proven useful for Russian forces in Ukraine, very few of these advanced tanks exist. Less than 100 units have been manufactured since the platform’s introduction in 2016.
The video also notes that each tank costs roughly $4.5 million to produce, making it a valuable tool on the battlefield and a high-value target for Ukrainian forces.
The clip was posted on Telegram by Ukraine’s K2 unit. In the accompanying post, the unit describes how aerial reconnaissance discovered the tank.
“At the enemy position, aerial reconnaissance found a tank … Leaving it in working condition is a sin. It was decided to destroy. The operation lasted half a night and you see the results on video,” the post reads.
The clip offers a view of the strikes on the tank from the perspective of a Ukrainian drone. As the drone approaches the tank, it slowly begins to aim until the vehicle is in the center of its crosshairs. The drone operator then releases munitions that land on top of the tank, destroying it.
Geolocators found the precise location of the strike, noting that it occurred close to Spirne, in Donetsk oblast. One volunteer for the @GeoConfirmed Twitter account, which provides exact locations for all sorts of incidents globally, provided photographs and satellite imagery that prove the attack occurred at 48.810599, 38.269599.
Ukrainian forces often use drones as an easy and efficient way to take out equipment and vehicles that have been abandoned by the Russian military.
The strikes ensure these vehicles cannot easily be recovered in the event that enemy troops eventually find themselves back in their old, abandoned positions.
