Republicans are unlikely to impeach President Joe Biden for alleged high crimes and misdemeanors related to his conduct in office in the near term. Republican leaders such as Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan say impeachment talk is premature.
Any impeachment articles would have to be approved by Jordan’s committee.
Jordan notes the Republican leadership is not currently focused on impeaching Biden. At this point, Newsweek reports that they are just out to “get the facts.” He told Punchbowl News that Republicans don’t want to rush to impeach Biden without getting their facts right the way he thinks Democrats did.
“You think about [Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro] Mayorkas, he certainly warrants impeachment, but that’s a decision we have to make as a conference … And relative to the president, of course, that’s a decision that’s going to be made by the full Republican Conference and the speaker and no one’s really focused on that now,” Jordan said.
Jordan is not the only Republican who thinks a more methodical and thorough course of action is required.
“I have a lot of serious questions that deserve answers. But I am going to try something that the Democrats never did under President Trump. We are going to wait and see all of the evidence before we determine what the appropriate response is,” Rep. Kelly Armstrong, R-Neb., said.
Cruz, Greene Call for Biden Impeachment
Calls from outspoken Republican members of Congress to impeach Biden already have begun.
Sen. Ted Cruz called for Biden’s impeachment this week.
He made the call after following the announcement by Sen. Charles Grassley and House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer that a whistleblower stated that the FBI had evidence that Biden engaged in a pay-to-play scheme. The alleged proposal was detailed in an unreleased FD-1023 form, suggesting that then-Vice President Joe Biden accepted a bribe from a foreign national in exchange for a change in U.S. foreign policy.
Comer’s subpoena notes that the FD-1023 form was “created or modified in June 2020″
“The American people need to know if President Biden sold out the United States of America to make money for himself,” Comer said in a press release.
Cruz told Fox News host Sean Hannity Thursday that impeaching Biden would not require a high crime or misdemeanor in this case “because the Constitution specifies impeachment for treason, bribery, or other high crimes or misdemeanors.”
“The evidence of Joe Biden profiting from this corruption is growing and growing, and growing.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., told Kimberly Guilfoyle on her Rumble show that Biden should be impeached for the “Biden criminal enterprise.”
“And I do believe that it’s our responsibility and our duty as Republicans in Congress to lead the impeachment and impeach Joe Biden in the House of Representatives,” Greene said.
Other Republicans are talking about impeachment.
‘If President Biden is in fact compromised … I don’t see how we could not look into impeachment,’ Oversight member Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., told The Daily Mail of the consequences for the president should the allegations of corruption have substantiation.
Rep. Nick Langworthy, R-N.Y., agreed, saying that if the allegations are substantiated that it would be a textbook impeachment case.
Oversight Committee Taking Its Time, Democrats Pushback
Comer’s committee that is looking into Biden family finances for evidence of corruption is not in a rush to push for impeachment.
“Chairman Comer and the Oversight Committee are focused on obtaining the FD 1023 document from the FBI to determine the truth and accuracy of the information contained within it,” an Oversight Committee spokesperson told The Daily Mail. “We aren’t going to speculate on the outcome of the investigation and have not spoken to anyone about impeachment.”
Oversight Committee Ranking Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin, a key player in the two Trump impeachments, dismissed talk of impeaching Biden, suggesting it was Russian disinformation.
“During this same time period, Rudy Giuliani and Russian agents, sanctioned by Trump’s Treasury Department, were peddling disinformation aimed at interfering in the 2020 presidential election,” Raskin said.
