One really big gun: The earth shakes as an M109A6 Paladin fires a gas propelled 155mm Howitzer round through the enormous canon, the biggest of Battle Kings arsenal as 1-9 Field Artillery, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, conducts their gun calibration at Destiny Range in Mosul, Iraq, Apr. 23.

The war in Ukraine just keeps getting more intense by the second.

Who will win at the end of the conflict?

While we don’t know for sure, we do know social media has a story to tell us:

Watch Ukraine Destroy Russian Howitzer In Donetsk – Video footage shared online a few months back shows the Ukrainian military taking out Russian howitzers using guided projectiles.

The video, shot from above by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), shows how Ukraine continues to take out Russian military vehicles at a pace faster than Russia can replace them.

The video shows Russian soldiers walking around a self-propelled howitzer before a guided missile strikes the vehicle and throws the soldiers to the ground.

The howitzer then catches fire, and onboard ammunition gradually ignites one by one.

The vehicle is eventually left in a ball of flames.

Ukraine Weapons Tracker, a popular Twitter account that monitors the war in Ukraine, shared the clip back in January.

“In #Donetsk Oblast, the Ukrainian army destroyed a Russian 2S1 122mm self-propelled howitzer and damaged a 2A36 Giatsint-B 152mm towed howitzer using M982 Excalibur guided projectiles,” Ukraine Weapons Tracker writes.

What is the Excalibur?

As explained by Sandboxx News:

The M982 Excalibur is a special 155mm artillery round with an extended range. The artillery shell has a GPS and the ability to strike within approximately 250 to 500 feet of the target. As such, the M982 Excalibur is primarily used for close support fire missions where the presence of friendly forces or the threat of collateral damage to civilians or civilian infrastructure is high.

With a range that can reach 25 miles (with the existing artillery systems that the Ukrainian military uses), the M982 Excalibur can add that much more firepower to the Ukrainian counteroffensives, and further allow the Ukrainian military to use accuracy and precision strikes to take out the important Russian targets.

Some versions of the M982 Excalibur round have even laser-guided capabilities, though it is unlikely that these are the ones supplied to the Ukrainians.
