Ukrainians Capture Rare T-90S Russian Tank – A video shared on social media earlier this month shows how Ukrainian troops successfully captured a rare Russian T-90S tank somewhere in Kherson Oblast.

The video footage shows the tank outside of a damaged storage facility or retail building, as well as a Ukrainian soldier showing the tank his middle finger.

The video was shared on Twitter by Ukraine Weapons Tracker.

“The first documented capture of the rare Russian T-90S tank by the Ukrainian army – filmed somewhere in #Kherson Oblast,” the post accompanying the video reads.

“These tanks, originally intended for export, were instead transferred to the Russian army after the serious armour losses experienced.”

Why Is It Rare?

The T-90S is an upgraded and enhanced version of the T-90 Main Battle Tank manufactured by Russian machine-building company UralVagonZavod.

The T-90S was originally designed for export and is presently in use by the Indian military.

It is also the latest version of the Russian T-series tank, featuring improve mobility, armor, and firepower.

The T-90S has been in use for some time. The model was first purchased by India in 2001, when the Indian government purchased 310 of the tanks. In 2017, Iraq purchased 73 of the tanks.

During the invasion of Ukraine, Russia deployed some of its remaining T-90S tanks to Ukraine to fill a significant and growing gap in its tank stores.

Russian Army Receives New T-90M Tanks

UralVagonZavod continues to produce tanks for the Russian military, despite shortages of essential technologies and equipment from Western manufacturers. In a press release issued earlier this week, the Russian manufacturer announced that a new batch of T-90M Proryv MBTs were on their way to the front lines.

“Uralvagonzavod has successfully fulfilled its next contract for the delivery of T-90M Proryv tanks. The armor batch has already been sent to the Defense Ministry of Russia,” the press release explains.

The press release also said that assembly lines in Nizhny Tagil are working at full capacity to deliver the tanks Russian soldiers need in Ukraine.

The T-90M may well be an advanced tank, but Ukrainian forces have had some success already taking out the vehicles. One video released by the Ukrainian military this month shows a Russian T-90M tank on a dirt track, engulfed in smoke following a Ukrainian strike.

Soldiers reportedly destroyed the tank using an AT4 recoilless gun somewhere in the Luhansk region of Ukraine.
