Joe Biden Seeks Re-election With Union Backing – Unions want to be a factor that puts Joe Biden over the finish line in 2024.
He kicked off his campaign Saturday, hoping to strengthen their resolve to get him re-elected at an event in Philadelphia.
“I’m excited about this is the beginning of something big,” Biden said, “and we’ll begin changing the economic balance.”
The president also promised to soak the rich with taxes saying he would make the rich pay their fair share.
He also slammed Republicans for opposing all of his fiscal policies that he claims have brought down the inflation rate over the past year.
Unions Split on Joe Biden
This time the president, who has long been a union supporter, faces opposition from the United Auto Workers and its 400,000 members.
The UAW has been upset over the Biden administration’s push to replace the internal combustion engine with electric vehicles.
“The EV transition is at serious risk of becoming a race to the bottom,” an April UAW memo said, referring to electric vehicles. “We want to see national leadership have our back on this before we make any commitments.”
Nonetheless, the AFL-CIO has come out strongly for Joe Biden.
“There’s absolutely no question that Joe Biden is the most pro-union president in our lifetimes,” said AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler. “From bringing manufacturing jobs home to America to protecting our pensions and making historic investments in infrastructure, clean energy and education, we’ve never seen a president work so tirelessly to rebuild our economy from the bottom up and middle out.”
Biden also received the endorsement of the American Federal State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) on Friday. He likes calling himself the most pro-union president in history.
Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) told The Associated Press that Americans would support Biden because he was an alternative to the narratives of fear that she says is represented by former President Donald Trump. Weingarten said her union was trying to support Biden amid an effort by Republicans to exploit public outrage over transgenderism and other cultural issues.
Could Pennsylvania be the Keystone State for 2024?
Joe Biden likely chose Pennsylvania because it could hold the keys to victory next year.
The state has been a battleground between Democrats and Donald Trump since 2016. Blue-collar workers were the deciding factor in Trump’s win in the Keystone State in 2016; however, Democrat activism in the suburban counties surrounding Philadelphia and a large black voters came out in sufficient numbers to give it to Biden in 2020. COVID likewise proved a deciding factor against Trump.
Trump’s personality and influence continued to be toxic during the 2022 midterms when Gov. Josh Shapiro and Sen. John Fetterman defeated their Republican rivals.
The president constantly portrays himself as a native Pennsylvanian and as a kid from Scranton despite not having lived in the state in over 50 years and having been a long-time Delaware politician.
Pennsylvania has long been a union state, and Trump’s appeal among blue-collar workers means the rank-and-file will not automatically turnout for Biden.
