China’s ‘New’ White Emperor NGAD 6th Generation Fighter Has Gone Missing

Key Points and Summary –  China’s Baidi “White Emperor” concept, unveiled as a mock-up at Zhuhai 2024, promises almost everything: ultra-stealth, Mach 5–6 speeds, near-space flight, satellite-killing lasers, and AI-enabled manned–unmanned teaming to challenge future U.S. jets like the F-47 NGAD.

-On paper, it is a hypersonic, suborbital super-fighter that can direct drone wingmen and cook satellites from the edge of space.

-In reality, there’s no flying prototype, no proof of its exotic propulsion, or its “super intelligence” AI.

-Given current limits on hypersonics, lasers, and carrier integration, the White Emperor looks more like a prestige-heavy tech demonstrator than a near-term operational aircraft.

Is China’s White Emperor Next-Generation ‘NGAD’ Fighter Jet Even Real?

Where did the White Emperor go?

The Zhuhai air show in November 2024 left the defense acquisition world in a tizzy. The focus of the excitement was a mockup of a new, next-generation fighter jet introduced by China’s Aviation Industry Corporation: the Baidi White Emperor “B Type.”

The White Emperor, developed under the conceptual “Nantianmen Project,” had all the signs of being a future aerospace sensation.

But since then, the mockup that was shown has never been seen again. So what is going on?

What the Airplane Brings to the Table

The White Emperor was supposedly adorned with ultra-stealth radar-absorbent materials. It could launch hypersonic missiles and reach near space at suborbital altitudes to take on enemy satellites.

The White Emperor would also have an unmanned option. Sensor fusion and network-centric features would ensure high interoperability with other Chinese airplanes.

Could This Fighter Fly at plus-Mach 5?

The engines would be thrust-vectoring models that could push out hypersonic speeds between Mach 5 and Mach 6. Traveling so much faster than adversarial airplanes could allow it to quickly reach targets beyond the first and second island chains. The propulsion system would make for a super-maneuverabile aircraft that could outfly the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II. Perhaps it could take on the future F-47 with that kind of speed and agility.

China’s “White Emperor” (Baidi) is a 6th-generation stealth fighter mock-up designed to function as an integrated “space-air” platform. Presented by state-owned AVIC, the mock-up suggests capabilities for supersonic speeds near the atmosphere’s edge.

The airplane would have the weapons capacity needed to carry out air-to-air combat and ground-strike roles in a single operation.

On-board Lasers Could ‘Cook’ a Satellite

For the near-space mission to eliminate satellites, the White Emperor might be equipped with lasers. Directed-energy systems could also be used to suppress enemy air defenses or fry incoming missiles.

The cockpit would be highly advanced but still pilot friendly. “AI plays a central role in the Baidi White Emperor, which can process real-time data, assess threats, and select maneuvers without pilot input, enabling either semi-autonomous or fully autonomous missions,” according to Simple Flying.

Manned-Unmanned Teaming Is Likely

The White Emperor could excel in the coming era of “super intelligence,” with a fully autonomous unmanned version. The airplane could also control a loyal wingman drone.

The Chinese believe that even with all these features, the White Emperor would need very little maintenance and could stay in the air for long periods. It would have high loiter time, increasing the threat posed by its hypersonic weapons and directed energy systems.

The White Emperor’s networking capability could allow the airplane to integrate seamlessly with the Chinese navy’s carrier operations; there could even be a naval version someday.

All this would contribute to China’s pursuit of air superiority over future U.S. airplanes such as the F-47 NGAD and the F/A-XX. The White Emperor could dominate the skies over Taiwan and would fly so fast that no fighter like the Taiwanese F-16V Viper could stop it.

The Airplane Does Not Pass the Sniff Test

China would love to have an answer for the F-47 NGAD and F/A-XX. The marketing efforts for the White Emperor have been intense, and the mock-up does look fresh—but a mock-up of the airplane is all anyone has seen. It has a diamond-shaped, tail-less design that looks impressive but may exist only on paper. I’m skeptical of its claimed speed, maneuverability, and stealthiness

Like all authoritarian nations, the Chinese love to use weapon systems to improve national morale. The White Emperor is likely more of a prestige project with less-than-mature capabilities. An airplane that can reach sub-orbit and fly at hypersonic speed is too good to be true. AI super intelligence has also not yet been achieved, so any machine learning onboard likely performs at a more basic level.

Lasers are also heavy, and this would hurt the maneuverability of the White Emperor, as well as making a carrier-borne version unlikely.

The airplane could conduct manned-unmanned teaming though. China is excellent at drone development. But the United States is already perfecting the loyal wingman concept with its Collaborative Combat Aircraft, meaning the Chinese would not leap very far ahead of the Americans with such a capability.

The White Emperor is more of a technology demonstrator, rather than an airplane that will enter serial production in the 2030s. It is plausible that new capabilities such as AI and highly networked autonomous systems can be achieved, but the plus-Mach 5 speed is likely not attainable until much later in the airplane’s development. Near-space altitudes are likelier for seventh-generation fighters.

This airplane could also enter into the defense acquisition “valley of death,” when feature creep becomes so heightened that it never becomes an active-duty airplane and the entire program gets cancelled.

The Chinese are not likely to give up so easily, though. Expect the White Emperor to be displayed at the Zhuhai air show and expo in 2026. The airplane is good for a news release and breathless coverage by state media.
