Summary and Key Points: Between the first F-5 delivery in 1964 and the last in 1989, Northrop delivered every single aircraft on schedule, at or below the contract price, and performing as promised. That is 25 years and more than 2,600 airframes without a late delivery or a cost overrun, in an industry where neither is supposed to be possible. The aircraft that did it was never the best fighter available and was never meant to be. The F-5E Tiger II was built on a simple proposition — that allied air forces needed something credible, affordable and easy to maintain rather than the most advanced jet money could buy. It first flew on 11 August 1972, entered service in 1975, and armed more than 30 air forces. Roughly two-thirds of the originals are still operational in 26 countries.
The F-5 Tiger Fighter and the Sequel That Failed
One of the coolest designs ever introduced, Northrop Grumman’s F-5 tactical fighter series has served its customers for over six decades.
Initial designs were produced in the late 1950s. The F-5’s initial flight was July 31, 1963, at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.
The F-5E was an agile, highly maneuverable, reliable supersonic fighter that combined advanced aerodynamic design, engine performance, and low operating costs.
The aircraft is simple to maintain and keep airborne, resembling a fun-to-drive hot-rod car, and it was a very successful design.
Northrop Grumman built more than 2,600, with co-production and licensing agreements with Canada, the Republic of China (Taiwan), the Republic of Korea (South Korea), Spain, and Switzerland.
For a jet that never carried the prestige of an F-15 or an F-16, the Northrop F-5E Tiger II quietly became one of the most successful fighters of the Cold War.

Built on the philosophy that allied air forces needed something “credible, affordable, and easy to maintain” rather than the most advanced jet money could buy, the F-5E first flew on August 11, 1972, and entered service in 1975.
Northrop and its partners built more than 2,600 F-5-family aircraft: 792 F-5E and 146 F-5F models, plus 12 reconnaissance RF-5Es from Northrop alone, with additional licensed production of 91 in Switzerland, 68 in South Korea, and 308 in Taiwan.
The U.S. Air Force’s original engineering and production contract, awarded in December 1970, was a fixed-price deal worth $415.6 million, remarkably cheap even by 1970s standards, which was exactly the point.
The aircraft armed more than thirty air forces, from Switzerland and South Korea to Saudi Arabia, Iran, and much of Latin America, and many still fly upgraded Tiger IIs today.
The Incredible Manufacturing Record And The Failed Sequel
The F-5 Tiger II had an outstanding manufacturing record that may never be equaled again.

Approximately two-thirds of the original production F-5s remain operational in 26 countries, including the United States.
The U.S. Navy operates the F-5 in its adversary squadrons to simulate enemy aircraft in aerial combat training exercises. The U.S. Air Force used the F-5 in a similar training role.
The real “what could have been” story isn’t the F-5E itself; it’s what Northrop built to replace it.
In the early 1980s, the company poured its own money into the F-5G, renamed the F-20 Tigershark, a single-engine, radar-upgraded successor purpose-built for the export market.

On paper, it was a remarkable airplane.
Northrop engineers pitched it as delivering roughly 80 percent of an F-16’s capability at a fraction of the cost, with a sustained turn rate of 13.2 degrees per second at Mach 0.8 (versus 12.8 for the F-16), a 35-degree angle-of-attack limit against the F-16’s 30, and the ability to climb to 40,000 feet in under three minutes from a cold start.
It could scramble from power-on to takeoff roll in about 22 seconds, needed roughly 15 maintenance hours per flight hour versus 34 for contemporary F-16s, and could fire AIM-7 Sparrow missiles beyond visual range — something early F-16s couldn’t do until 1989. Test pilot Chuck Yeager became one of its loudest champions.
Northrop spent about $1.2 billion of its own shareholder money developing the F-20, betting the whole program on exports rather than a U.S. Air Force contract.
Based on a projected 150-aircraft buy, the 1983 unit flyaway cost was estimated at $10.7 million (about $30 million today), actually cheaper than the export-restricted F-16/79 at $11 million and the full F-16A at $12.4 million.
It should have been an easy sell.
It never sold a single unit.
The F-5 Tiger Was A Superbly Designed Aircraft:
The American-designed Northrop F-5 was funded in the late 1950s and initially envisioned as a highly aerodynamic fighter with good handling characteristics, high thrust, supersonic capability, and ease of maintenance.
The F-5E fighter jet was an outgrowth of the F-5.

The F-5E was a beautiful and sleek airplane. It looked the part of being a fighter plane.
It was 47 feet long.
Its wingspan was 26 feet, and it was 13 feet high. Its loaded weight was 15,745 pounds.
The F-5E Tiger could reach speeds of 1,083 miles per hour with two 5,000-pound-thrust General Electric J85-GE-21A afterburner turbojets. Its ceiling was 52,000 feet, and the maximum range with drop tanks was 1,543 miles.
The one-seat F-5E had two 20mm M39A2 cannons in the nose and could carry two AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles under the wings.
The Tiger II could also drop 7,000 pounds of bombs.
The F-5E was designed to take on the Soviet MiG-21.

The fuselage was lengthened over the F-5A to accommodate more fuel.
The wings were given extensions for greater maneuverability. It had improved avionics and, finally, an Emerson Electric-designed radar – something the F-5A lacked. Northrop Built Nearly 800 F-5Es
South Korea Flew The F-5E For Decades:
The South Korean Air Force purchased 150 F-5Es.
They flew the Tiger II from the 1970s until they acquired the F-35 stealth fighter in 2019, following the finalization of a $7 billion deal with the United States, according to Stripes.com.
South Korea now has 40 F-35 Lightning IIs. South Korea also licensed production of F-5Es in 1980, which were later renamed the Skymaster.

Northrop also produced a two-seat trainer aircraft based on the F-5E, named the T-38 Talon. Some of the two-seat T-38s were used at the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) along with F-5Es.
The mystery MiG fighter in Top Gun that Tom Cruise flies inverted over was actually a hot-rod F-5E.
Nearly 1,200 were built, and NASA keeps a fleet of these T-38s as astronaut trainers and chase planes.
When Hollywood filmed Armageddon, the would-be astronauts took test flights in T-38s. For the trivia buffs, NASA found 168 errors in Armageddon.
