A lawyer for an IRS criminal supervisory agent alleged in a letter to Congress that the Biden administration has obstructed justice in Hunter Biden’s case. The letter claims that a high-ranking Biden administration official lied to Congress in sworn testimony.
Hunter Biden: A New Scandal
Hunter Biden is not mentioned by name in the letter; however, media coverage indicates that the president’s son is the target of the letter. He confirmed that he faced a criminal investigation into his taxes shortly after the 2020 presidential election.
The FBI retrieved his laptop in December 2019 after he abandoned it at a Delaware computer store. The laptop contained hundreds of emails, photos, audios, and other documents potentially implicating him and his family members in potential tax crimes and violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).
The anonymous IRS agent wants congressional whistleblower protections to make disclosures in a “nonpartisan manner” to the leaderships of the relevant committees on both sides of the aisle, attorney Mark Lytle wrote.
Lytle previously represented Twitter executive Yoel Roth during congressional testimony last year.
The letter alleges that serious conflicts of interest exist in the investigation and that Lytle’s client wishes to “detail examples of preferential treatment and politics improperly infecting decisions and protocols that would normally be followed by career law enforcement professionals in similar circumstances if the subject was not politically connected.”
The whistleblower hopes to keep Hunter Biden’s tax records confidential as is required under the law.
“My client would like to share the same legally protected disclosures with Congress pursuant to 26 U.S.C. § 6103(f)(5) and the protections afforded by 5 U.S.C. 2302(b)(8)(C)—that he has already shared with other oversight authorities. Out of an abundance of caution regarding taxpayer privacy laws, my client has refrained from sharing certain information even with me in the course of seeking legal advice. Thus, it is challenging for me to make fully informed judgments about how best to proceed,” Lytle wrote.
The attorney notes that the allegations have been shared with the inspector generals of the Treasury and Justice departments.
“We appreciate this outreach and look forward to sitting down promptly with this individual to better understand the scope and detail of the concerns raised,” The New York Post reported House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith, R-Mo., as having said Wednesday evening. “It is our responsibility to ensure the tax code is applied fairly and appropriately to all Americans — whether through the oversight efforts this Committee initiates or the need for oversight that is brought to our attention.”
Hunter Biden’s finances and those of his family are under review by the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. Sens. Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., and Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, also have placed Hunter Biden’s finances and alleged pay-to-play schemes under investigation.
They found that the Bidens received millions of dollars from China’s CEFC Energy company and that Hunter Biden’s Chinese business partners had close involvement with organizations belonging to China’s military intelligence apparatus.
It also showed that President Joe Biden may have helped Hunter Biden and his partners obtain business with Mexican billionaires Carlos Slim and Manuel Alemán Velasco.
Information on the laptop provided a closer look also into Hunter Biden’s involvement with Burisma, the controversial and allegedly corrupt Ukrainian gas firm, and
What Happens Next?
“It’s deeply concerning that the Biden administration may be obstructing justice by blocking efforts to charge Hunter Biden for tax violations,” House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said. “We’ve been wondering all along where the heck the DOJ and the IRS have been. Now it appears the Biden administration may have been working overtime to prevent the Bidens from facing any consequences.”
