Re-fueling In-air Is Good News for the B-21
The next-generation stealth bomber has reached an important milestone. Photos have been released that show the Raider conducting an aerial refueling operation.

There’s a War On – Let’s Move Faster
The Air Force is prodding Northrop Grumman to move even faster, as the Raider is supposed to enter active duty in 2027.
The Air Force needs as many strike airplanes in service as possible. During Operation Epic Fury, bombers are dropping and launching ordnance on long-range strike missions against Iran. The B-2, B-1B, and B-52 have been busy. It would be nice to have another stealth bomber ready to fly regularly.
Numerous Geopolitical Threats
The year 2027 is when China may finally invade Taiwan. B-21s would be a handy piece of military hardware if the United States decided to intervene during a China-Taiwan clash. North Korea is another threat in northeast Asia. The B-21 could fire anti-ship missiles to fight the Chinese navy and the North Korean maritime forces, if needed. North Korea has a new destroyer conducting sea trials and testing weapons.
Russia is always a concern in Eastern Europe. NATO would love for the United States to have the B-21 ready to go if Vladimir Putin ever decided to attack an alliance member. If the B-21 is deployable by 2027, that would be a welcome addition to NATO air power.
Internet Personalities Show Tankers Operating With the B-21
The Raider program is forging ahead to meet these potential contingencies. A bevy of online sleuths spotted the B-21 refueling with a KC-135R Stratotanker this week. The “ghost tanker” is stationed at Edwards Air Force Base, California. One image shows the B-21 plugged in to a KC-135R while flying over the Mojave Desert on March 10.
An F-16 Was Flying Around the Tanker Too
The operation was also accompanied by an F-16 Fighting Falcon on a chase flight. This is customary when a new airplane like the B-21 is undergoing testing and evaluation.
More About the KC-135R
The KC-135R Stratotanker is the main aerial refueler for the Air Force. It has been updated considerably over the last six decades. It can carry 83,000 pounds of jet fuel. I have actually been in a KC-135 as it refueled an F-16 over Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico. I was serving as a photographer for the Mayor’s Office for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve agency based in Albuquerque. Refueling is one intricate effort.

Video of B-21 Raider Is Out There
Air Force enthusiast Jarold M. Hamilton captured video of the B-21 refueling that shows the operation was successful. This means the B-21 is one-step closer to active duty. Future combat missions with the stealth bomber would need a tanker hook-up for jet fuel at least once on a deployment to East Asia or the Middle East. The B-21 will be stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota.
B-21 Attributes Are Impressive
The B-21 is a dual-capable strategic airplane that can deliver nuclear weapons. It can conduct conventional strikes with a bevy of precision-guided munitions to punish adversaries after avoiding air defenses. The Raider can also collect Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance data.
Northrop Grumman has been working on the B-21 since 2015. The bomber passed its first critical design review for weapon systems with flying colors.
How Many B-21s Will Enter Regular Operational Duty
The Air Force aims to acquire at least 100 Raiders, but many call for that number to be plussed-up to 150 or more. Average unit procurement cost is expensive at $550 million. This includes “aircraft flyaway costs, support equipment, training, spares, and engineering change orders divided by a minimum of 100 aircraft,” the Air Force reported.
What’s the Wingspan Size?
The size of the Raider is an interesting point of departure for many aerospace experts. The War Zone’s Tyler Rogoway posted on X that “A lot of people think the B-21 is a lot smaller than it actually is. I love seeing graphics that show like 125 foot wingspans. Not even close. Yes it’s smaller than the B-2 but not that much!”
Things Are Developing Nicely
Let’s hope the Raider can maintain its proficiencies and speedy production milestones. The more flight hours it can log, the quicker it will meet active duty, at a time when there are multiple threats around the world and a war is going on with Iran. Aerial refueling will allow test pilots to fly the stealth warbird for many more hours. It should reach active duty in 2027.
