The health of Russian President Vladimir Putin has been in the spotlight long before the war in Ukraine broke out. Reports speculating that Putin is suffering from a serious illness have increased in frequency over the last year, however, and seem to peak over the holiday period.

Several reports, along with decisions made by the Russian president, indicate that something could well be wrong.

Putin Coughs During New Year’s Eve Address

During his annual New Year’s Eve address last Saturday, Putin appeared to experience a coughing fit that had some speculating that it could be a symptom of a serious illness.

BBC reporter Francis Scarr uploaded a video to Twitter showing the Russian president struggling to deliver his address without erupting into a coughing fit.

In a space of seven seconds, the Russian president coughed three times and could be seen attempting to hold back the cough while he continued to speak

Others noted that the president appeared “jittery,” something other reporters and doctors have previously reported about the Russian leader. In other videos recorded over the last year, Putin can be seen attempting to control physical convulsions.

In some videos, Putin’s arms and legs appear to shake during meetings with foreign leaders.

Report Claims Putin Fell Down Stairs And Soiled Himself

According to the controversial General SVR Telegram account, which is rumored to be run by a former Russian spy, Vladimir Putin suffered a fall in his Moscow residence in late November.

According to the channel, the 70-year-old Russian president fell down five steps and injured his tailbone. The incident allegedly caused the Russian president to “involuntarily defecate” as his assistants came to his aid.

The channel also claimed that Putin is undergoing treatment for the “stomach and bowels.”

The claims could not be verified and the identity of the owner of the channel remains unknown.

We Just Don’t Know What’s True

Is Putin ill?

It’s hard to tell. Reports of the Russian president’s poor health have existed for years and are likely to keep coming.

We don’t know what’s true, but we do know that Putin has chosen to avoid the public spotlight on several occasions recently – canceling his annual press conference and end-of-year ice hockey match, and postponing his state of the nation speech.

It could suggest that the rumors are true, but it could just as likely be a result of growing pressure on Putin to end the war. While Russians overwhelmingly supported Putin’s war in Ukraine at the beginning of the conflict, after almost a year of economic turmoil, the Russian people, soldiers, and military commanders are increasingly questioning Putin’s decisions.

That alone could be enough to encourage Putin to avoid unnecessary public appearances.
